More Christian’s should read this
First thing one should know is that the actually work of Augustine represents only half of the books material. There is a long introduction that outlines and explains Augustine’s goals with this project.Second, this work also included Augustine’s own revisions. Augustine in his later years wrote revisions of many of his works. They serve as theological updates. They are not only helpful new entries in themselves, but a fascinating look into the mind of Augustine and the development of his theology.Lastly, this is nothing like a modern homiletics text book. The entire first “book” Augustine presents a theological anthropology of sorts. Only afterwords does he address how one should approach interpreting and teaching scripture.

Very Poor Translation
This series provides readers with a very poor and stilted translation of Augustine. It waters down his language in general and renders certain terms strange. A great example is the translation of caritas via as charity street. This is ridiculous. This should be translated as the way of charity or the way of love. Instead, the translators opt for a stilted literalist rendering which really is not translating. You might as well find the text some where online in Latin and throw it into google translate. Translation is an actual art and it requires the translator to take something expressed one way in one language and render it in another language as closely as possible to the concept or idea conveyed in the previous language. Translation is not supposed to translate the words but the concept or idea that the words signify.Ultimately the translations are awful. I though it was just this volume but it is all over the place. They render conicere audeo as "I hazard the conjecture" which just distorts what Augustine is saying in Sermon 37. Seriously, you might as well just throw a latin text into google translate.

A very lucid portrayal of a long progression of a journey towards his mature understandings.
The introduction provided an excellent overview of the approach taken by Augustine. Augustine was very lucid with this particular work.

a good one, part of a series
This is one of the volumes in a 50 volume set of the great Saint Augustine published by New City Press. The translator is wonderful, clear and precise. I like the layout of the book. The editor (a Dominican friar) did a msterful job in this project. I cant wait for the rest of the series!
