Excellent !,,
Very broad in scope. From an author who knows Russian history having written two books on Stalin. He doesn’t dwell on each tsar or tsarina individually but provides enough background to each and most importantly each relevant family tree. Some of them stood out as leaders like Catherine the Great and Peter the Great despite his barbaric approach to ruling. He made Russia what is today. Before him Russia had no navy. Compare this to the inept rule of Nicholas II who was out of touch with the real world and his family had been exploited by the charlatan Rasputin. Still a sad ending for him and his family. All in all a great read.

Russian rollercoaster
This is, appropriately for the subject matter, a dense and heavy book - how else could it be, given the complexity of the Romanov dynasty?Having said that, truth proves stranger even than fiction, and it's a compelling real-life soap opera from start to finish. Think Dynasty crossed with Eastenders, but with more blood spilt, power sought, ambition thwarted and plotting. Oh, there's a lot of plotting!I enjoyed it immensely but think it could have done with a bit of an edit to pare it back a bit.

Challenging read @ 657 pages + 35 pages of Bibliography, Index, Notes etc.,
Bought for my wife who hasn't yet looked at it. Appears can be read ( a long one ) as a historical / review of the dynasty for the period 1613 - 1918.The book includes several pages of colour and black and white photographs. For the Layman, this would be an interesting read ( from time to time ). For the serious student studying Russian history, it looks to be a very useful addition to a portfolio.Beware, print is very small.Hope this helps.

Utterly engrossing work of immense scholarship
A comprehensive and brilliantly observed study of one of the most famous and powerful lineages in history with richly textured character sketches of the principal characters and their impact on their times. A massive and important book of immense scholarship and insight. I found it utterly absorbing and hugely enjoyable and learnt a great deal.

Brilliant
Absolutely fascinating, the research he has done is really impressive. All the sordid stories about court behaviour make compulsive reading. he really brings the characters to life. Very usefu; booik mas we are currently studying the Romanovs at our U3A history class.
