Dried mango powder- a novel food ingredient for me
I have never used dried mango powder in my cooking before being given the opportunity to try this through Amazon Vine. It arrived in a foil sealed pouch and although this batch had been manufactured a year ago it has an expiry date a year into the future from the date it was delivered to me. After looking at on line recipes to see how it should be used I tried adding it to a homemade chicken curry. It is a very dry powder and served as a good thickening agent to the curry sauce. Its flavour was to a large extent overpowered by the spicy curry powder that I also added. On the packet in addition to the suggested use in a chicken curry that I have tried it suggests using it as a substitute for lemon juice. This is an option that I think could work as when I tested the taste of the powder in isolation I found it to be tangy and sour like lemon. The next time I use it will be as a substitute for lemon juice when cooking sea bass. I will continue to use the remainder of the packet that I have been sent but as it did not do much to add to the flavour of my curry I do not intend to re-order.
