Triple Album Collection

Essential (and cheap!) for Sisters of Mercy fans--even if you own the original CDs
What a fabulous collection! In one box set we have all three Sisters of Mercy CDs, with a bunch of bonus tracks on each one which are not just filler but incredible additions (in the example of the Vision Thing CD--which is the only CD so far in which I've listened to the bonus tracks). If you don't own all three CDs and are interested, this is an easy decision, because you can pick it up for less than $10 including shipping.I've always liked the Sisters of Mercy but have never thought of myself as a hardcore fan. Prior to this I only owned Floodland and Vision Thing. But listening to these CDs, I'm even more impressed with the musical accomplishments of Andrew Eldritch, Doktor Avalanche & Co. I'm going to limit my comments now to just Vision Thing.Vision Thing is a truly great CD. On this basically last of the studio CDs, the Sisters moved away from their gothic roots and make a full-on metal record. And what compelling, driving, even trance-metal it is. The opening song, the title track, sets the stage for the whole CD with a caustic, driving, and relentless song that savages the George H.W Bush presidency/era. Andrew Eldritch growls, screams, and wails his vocals through this blistering denouncement. The next song, "Ribbons," seems like an interesting riff with interesting lyrical imagery but feels incomplete as a song (however this is not the last word on the subject--see ahead). "Detonation Boulevard" pulls no punches and hits hard. And several tracks ahead is "Doctor Jeep," the most relentless, trance-metal song on the whole CD.Which then sets up the final two epic tracks, "More" and "I Was Wrong." Is there anyone out there who does menace and snarling better than Andrew Eldritch? "More" is the single that got the radio airplay, and it's a masterful, epic song that builds to quite the climax. And just when you think the CD has hit its peak comes the final track, "I Was Wrong." An acoustic and utterly beautiful song, it melds incredible sound, melifluous music, and caustic words into a stunning, brilliant song that caps a magnificent CD.In my experience, it's rare when bonus tracks on a re-issued CD land into "essential" category, but that's the case here. The extended versions of "When You Don't See Me" and "Doctor Jeep" are fine enough. But there are two absolute gems: the studio song "You Could Be The One" and the live version of "Ribbons." "You Could Be The One" is a first-rate song, and it's inexplicable that it was left off the original Vision Thing CD. It's a very welcome addition. But nothing prepared me for the live version of "Ribbons." Every now and then, a band does one of their songs live that absolutely transforms it from unmemorable to something incredible (think U2's "Bad"). And the live version of "Ribbons" is exactly that. Recorded in Hamburg, Germany in 1990, this is a harrowing, blistering, and totally committed live performance of "Ribbons" that transforms the relatively benign studio song and shoots it into the stratosphere. Listen to the guitar work and be awed. And Andrew Eldritch's vocal performance is so impassioned that it's nearly scary. I never had any strong feelings one way or another about "Ribbons" before I heard this live version, but this performance reveals "Ribbons" to be a fantastic and utterly original song. It seems to me it was not fully realized in the studio, but it is live--and then some. Wow!I am so pleased that I purchased this set, not just because I filled the hole in my Sisters of Mercy collection, but because of the bonus tracks I've heard thus far (from Vision Thing). Anyone who cares about this band will get great pleasure from this box set.

Great albums, can't stop listening. Bonus tracks.
I didn't have any complaints. I see some reviews above about copy protection and not letting it play in a pc. I've backed up my entire cd collection to mp3 to play on my old Microsoft Zune in my car and had no issues whatsoever backing this up using windows 10 and converting it to mp3. The bonus tracks are a great addition. Wish I could give it more stars than what is allowed. Buy this set if you are a fan, you won't regret it! Trust me!

This is a nice collection for a reasonable price
This is a nice collection for a reasonable price. You get a no frills package without any booklets or lyric pamphlets, just each disc in it's own cardboard sleeve with a picture of the album cover on the front and track listing on the back. The three sleeves then tuck neatly into an outer cardboard slip cover. These are the remastered and expanded editions of each disc that were released a few years ago. (You can see the full track listing in Amazon's scan of the back cover.)I don't know what kind of optical drive or software the previous reviewer was using that caused him to deem these discs unrippable. I was able to rip all three discs to FLAC/MP3 for my portable devices with a cheapo Sony Optiarc DVD burner using dBpoweramp as well as Exact Audio Copy without any issues. As far as a review of the albums themselves, I think they are all very good offerings. If you are not already familiar with this band they seem to get labelled as goth or gothic rock, but I wouldn't call it mopey drink coffee and smoke cigarettes music. If you are into hard rock and metal you will probably like a lot of these songs.

Hot metal and methadrine!
This is an amazing packaging of the three albums, all in expanded editions. The CDs are in cardboard sleeves that are replicas of the original vinyl. Sound quality is excellent. Zero problems ripping the songs. The Sisters Of Mercy were a rock 'n' roll band like no other and I'm not sure anyone ever looked cooler than Andrew Eldritch (possible exceptions would be Peter Murphy and Daniel Ash). Great albums, great packaging, great price.

Bonus tracks on First Last And Always don't play
I will still give it 5 stars. Where I live they want $$$ for this, it was a bargain as far as I'm concerned.
