Q: How long is the shelf life, if not used? I bought several for Christmas gifts, but they were not received in time. Would they still be good next yr?

I would take it out and charge it if I was waiting a year to gift it. Rechargeable batteries could fail if fully discharged from setting

Q: Do these work inside, e.g. my basement workshop? Others have very poor reception. even to local stations.

I use it in my basement all the time with good reception. I only listen to local stations so I can't say how well it works for distant stations

Not much !! Want stay on my head good.

It is itself an FM receiver. You turn it on, tune it to your desired radio station, put it on your head and enjoy! Good reception, comfortable fit and are great for daily walks, working in the yard or whatever suits your fancy. You don't have to plug it in to any other device to operate it.
