Product Description Survivors:Complete Original Series (1975-1977)The original 1970’s drama based on the thrilling novel by Terry Nation is now on DVD! Survivors takes place in the aftermath of a devastating virus. When an enigmatic unnamed scientist accidentally infects himself with a lethal engineered virus he unwittingly spreads it worldwide via air travel. Focusing on London, England we see the effects of the virus as millions succumb and civilization collapses accordingly. The story hones in on a handful of emotionally scarred survivors who come together and attempt the difficult and painful reconstruction of a new society no longer able to depend on supplied science and technology.]]> .com "Everything's all gone to pot," a character says at the beginning of this gripping 1975 BBC series. It's a characteristically understated British way of saying, "It's the end of the world as we know it." Created by Terry Nation, already installed in the cult sci-fi pantheon as the creator of Dr. Who's Daleks, Survivors plops viewers down in a postapocalyptic nightmare already in progress. We hear reports of evacuations, massive power outages, and frighteningly large body counts. A globally spread virus has taken its devastating toll, leaving survivors to carry on in this primitive new world. Series 1's key players are Abby (Carolyn Seymour), a widowed middle class housewife determine to find her son, a missing student; Greg (Ian McCulloch), a resourceful engineer; and the compassionate Jenny (Lucy Fleming). The first--and best--13 episodes chart how these three come together and the tentative first steps in beginning civilization anew. A series benchmark is the episode "Law and Order," in which their fledgling settlement debates the fate of one of their number who has been found guilty of murder. As the saga unfolds, we meet some who would like to exploit the situation to exert their own "central control." We meet another, Anne (Myra Frances), a "rich brat" determined "to make sure I get my full share of everything that's going." But Survivors, bleak as its scenario is, is not without an abiding faith in human nature. Nation left the production before series 2, as did Seymour, who reveals in a candid series retrospective included as a bonus feature that her grappling with substance abuse led to her departure. In the second and third series, Greg, Jenny, and company further learn to adapt "to this ghastly way of life." A gallery of disparate and desperate characters put the tenets of the settlement to the test, while our heroes venture out into what's left of the world, most memorably in the second series' two-parter "Lights of London." Survivors enjoys a sizable cult following. While not as popularly known in the United States as The Prisoner (which, like Survivors, has been given the remake treatment), it should survive and thrive on DVD. --Donald Liebenson

Great show that is unfortunately relevant to the current moment
Pretty morbid I guess, but being home quarantining for going on almost a year due to COVID, my thoughts returned to this classic show that I'd somehow discovered around 2010. Couldn't find it anywhere so I was glad to find the DVD set. Packaging is OK but the discs aren't very easy to get out and they're double sided. It's a fun show that is dated but I think holds up pretty well. What I like is how it's more sedated and tries to "do less" than modern shows where everything is held at a fever pitch all the time- huge stakes, so much yelling, the villain is always a mastermind (thinking of the Cumberbatch Sherlock here). This gives it a sort of realism. In the show, people are left over after a plague kills 4999 out of every 5000 people. Some survivors are capable but many are just lost, confused, and have no skills. Maybe because it's British and not American, while there are many guns, people seem reluctant to kill or injure each other. I remember reading that stone age people where/are less ready to do violence to others and if that's true, it seems appropriate that the show depicts this, intentionally or unintentionally. If you're interested in post apocalyptic stuff like The Walking Dead, Jericho, Last Man on Earth, The Rain, The Stand, or zombie stuff in general, this might be a good show to check out.

A long-time favorite in a handy package
I saw episodes of this 1975 show in around 1990 (while stationed in Texas); fell in love with it almost instantly. Which is weird when you consider how downbeat and downright depressing the show is. It's a COVID-like End Of Civilization, covered in loving detail from start to finish, and we follow a group of survivors (the veriest handful of humanity is naturally immune to the virus, and no scientists survived long enough to develop a cure) as they wander from place to place, initially on a Person Hunt, later as they set up to survive in an electricity-free world. The absolute background silence (no music at all) was unintentional on the part of the producers--they didn't have time for it--but works so bloody well to convey the lifelessness of the new world. The characters as well change and grow as the series progresses, which is always a good thing. Characters join the cast, characters die or are killed, injustice prevails, and a good time is had by all who aren't living it. :) I snagged seasons 1 and 2 years ago (region-free DVD player, was watching them before they were commercially available in the U.S.), but missed on season 3, and it's not easily available separately now. This Whole Series collection is nicely-priced, though, so I'll just call this one my case and store the two older ones. My season 1 and 2 boxes came with interesting little information booklets about the show; this collection comes with nothing but disks. And the @#$%^&*! disks are double-sided, the viewers' bane. No extra features, but honestly, you come for the show. If you like post-apocalyptic stories (particularly zombie-free. Violence-free, too), you canNOT afford to miss this one. Well-produced, well-written, well-acted--not many shows can say that nowadays, and this one's vintage 1975! Get it. You'll enjoy it.

Haven't watched the whole series yet, but...
I'm impressed with what I've seen so far. This is grimmer than I'd expect from something done for the BBC in the 70's. At times it's almost as harsh as The Walking Dead, which it resembles a lot, but without the zombies or the gore (and that's exactly what I was hoping for when I bought it). Like the Walking Dead, the actions of the other people are the source of the worst problems, and there are plenty of bad ones here. One vigilante group is reminiscent of Negan and the Saviors from Walking Dead. It's fairly realistic in its depiction of a S.H.T.F. scenario, although it is a little weird that supplies are so hard to come by when nearly everyone in the country is dead. They're scrambling for scraps already when the apocalyptic event only recently happened... but, I guess it wouldn't be as dramatic or suspenseful if they were flush with food and ammo, so, that's easy to overlook for the sake of the story. Overall, very good series, and I'm hoping the episodes I haven't watched yet will hold up.

Excellent early post-apocalyptical show before they became cool.
I first saw this show in the early 1990s. My husband's graduate business class professor recommended it when discussing fiat money instead of a barter system. It has cheap 1970s BBC production values, but the story is compelling. It is low-key and slow, without a lot of action, but more thoughtful than new shows. They tried to remake it in 2008, but it focused more on anti-corporate conspiracies instead of how a society rebuilds after a cataclysmic virus killing 95%-98% of the population. Imagine a virus that kills everyone you know. How do the few survivors live? Can a functioning society develop? I was thinking about this show during the current pandemic and was happy to see a DVD of is available.

Good Quality DVD print
I own the book, the audio plays, the remake tv series, etc. I have always loved this tv show an things and so to get it on DVD and not have to watch poorly done rips an etc from online or youtube is great.Four starts only though because the packaging is a bit terrible for double sided disc folding up directly onto the disc faces potentially scratching them if you open them or close them too often. The video is so clean an touched in some scenes it looks so fake and poorly acted, sometimes cleaning up a video show from long ago is good but there is such a thing as too clean.

Not able to be viewed
I was really looking forward to watching The Survivers again. Sadly, when I loaded the first disc, I was informed that it was not available to view in my area (Warwicshire). I certainly would not have ordered it if I had known this.I really feel that this should have been made apparent before ordering.

A TRULY REMARKABLE SHOW!
Considering the ravaging, relentless, and rabid spread of COVID 19, this show's premise of a small coterie of survivors endeavouring to scratch out an existence for themselves from the carnage of a savage pandemic that wiped out 90% of the population is incredibly prescient. Imagine a world without electricity, running water, or even medical professionals. Imagine having to grow your own crops, make candles, and prepare food from scratch. As the show progresses, episodes deal intelligently with the spectrum of human organizations, group dynamics, economic systems, and romantic relationships. The only flaw in this television series, is the camera work, especially in season one, seemed somewhat stilted. Nevertheless, I fully understand why this TV show was highly popular in Great Britain in the mid-1970's, and consider it incredible value from numerous viewpoints.

believable and interesting
This was an excellent rendition of just what might happen if most of the world dies in a 2 week span. Excellent science fiction based on the practical. How does one eat. Where would one sleep. Who could be trusted. I liked how the characters ran across characters who were coping in their own unique way and later on you would meet up with them again and find out what happened. There is violence, greed, desire for power and control and there is love and the big question of how to repopulate the earth and where to get your next loaf of bread.Very practical and believable. There are surprises and emergencies and struggles. An excellent philosophical rendition of the big: what if....I did not want it to end but when it did end it was on a positive and hope-filled note.

Eerily Realistic
I remember watching this show in the 70s and was thrilled to find this CD set. There's something about watching a low-tech post-apocalypse show that gives you the eerie feeling that this is what it would really be like when the mundane aspects of life we take for granted suddenly become critical. Definitely worth watching.
