A Good General Resource Before Digging the Hole
Planting a fruit tree is embarking on a long-term relationship, and understanding how to think like a tree is vital to success. The book is a perfect capsule for anyone thinking about planting a fruit tree or growing a small orchard. The general concepts are covered in a fast-reading, simple format. It provides an excellent overview that applies to just about all temperate fruit trees, especially pruning, site selection, irrigation, introduction to rootstocks, and many other topics. It does not go into specific crops, but skillfully distills the concepts that apply best across species. Notes on fertilization and crop protection do not venture into conventional synthetic strategies, which can be helpful if not required in some regions, owing again to the general vibe of the book. Overall it is a well written primer that serves as a stepping off point for those interested in the growing world of fruit tree horticulture.

SUN, AIR, WATER, FOOD
My first experience with fruit trees occurred when I moved to Oregon last year during a very hot, very dry summer. The property I bought included two abandoned orchards containing 28 fruit trees. I knew nothing except that the surviving trees needed water and trimming so I put in an irrigation system and signed up for Susan Poizner’s pruning class. She’s a good teacher and I pruned the trees, happy I had taken her class. Subsequently, I was invited to review Poizner’s new book, and was delighted to do so.Not surprisingly, the book is well organized, clearly written and easy to follow, even for a complete novice. She starts it off by discussing tree choice, disease resistance and climate zones, all very important considerations. Poizner follows up by discussing the importance of planting location (full sun for fruit trees), well-drained soil with appropriate pH and N P K values, and how to determine these. How to water and feed the trees comes next, then the importance of mulching. Also included are clear instructions for pruning. It is a great beginner’s guide!

Straight to the point, informative, quick read
I don’t have enough good things to say about this book. It’s easy to read, straightforward, and not overly complicated either while still being packed with tons of good useful information!I wish I would have read it before planting my trees, as there are so many things I would have done differently. Even after having tress already planted I still found a ton of value and info to help improve my trees.

Critical information, presented in a simple and straightforward way
While I love the internet, it seems like almost everything in life can turn into a monstrous research project, because it's so easy to go down a research rabbit hole..... The great news is that if you want to start growing fruit trees, this wonderful - plus short and to-the-point - book gives you the critical information that you need right up front. It should take an hour or so to read this and you'll have a very good idea what you'll want to consider before you even buy your first tree. It also has helpful links to additional resources on each topic, so if you want to dig deeper, you can do that easily. Such a great getting started guide!

Good basic information for rank beginners
Has good, accurate, basic information for those who have never gardened before. Not much here for more advanced growers, and much of the book is links to the author's podcasts, blog, and paid courses, interspersed with anecdotes from the author's experience with a Canadian community garden in a public park.

A Book I should have read as a beginner...
I received this book free in return for a review. I listen to Susan’s podcast as part of my ongoing self education. I have developed an edible landscape/food forest with a backyard nursery. I still remember what it’s like to be a beginner and the concepts I needed to learn to be successful. I found the book valuable to read as I was pruning my fruit trees. Susan emphasized the importance of pruning to keep a balance between the tree roots and its buds. It was a reminder that seemed very timely to me. Grow Fruit Trees Fast: A Beginners Guide to a Healthy Harvest in Record Time is a quick read that contains the basics you need to know. There are plenty of good directions if you are in a hurry but it does not end there. Growing fruit trees will lead to you discovering things you did not expect. Pests appear out of nowhere. Trees succumb to the winter cold. You do not have long enough to live, to learn everything the hard way. Susan provides many ideas on where to find out what you need to know to prevent disasters and grow fruit trees well. Opportunities like online courses, websites, podcasts, and books have enabled me to learn from a distance and they can do the same for you. This book is a low cost, simple way to get started on your fruit growing dream! Start here!

Growing fruit trees is not rocket science but…
… It’s a lot more challenging than lay people would think. And this is probably the worst mistake made by lay people: to thing that growing fruit trees is like growing vegetables. Getting educated in the field is most important way. BEFORE you buy or plant your first tree So many questions and issues come to mind: location, fruit trees selection (varieties) with regard of climate conditions in your neighborhood, how is the soil you are about to plant those trees, pruning, pest control etc…This ebook is a welcome addition for those who would like to get basic information BEFORE doing trials & errors until the patience and wallet are empty…Marc Lamarre, Stukely-sud, Québec, Canada
