Another gift for my sister
She is 8 months into her sobriety and is doing absolutely amazing! She has been reading a lot and I've noticed her looking at this workbook. I bought it for her for her birthday a few days ago and she's already almost done with it. Great book/workbook for sure!

Willing to do the work? This book puts the most powerful, effective tools in your grasp.
In the hands of anyone ready to do the work to overcome an addiction, this is a very powerful tool indeed. And I think it also belongs on the shelf - to be used and referenced frequently - of clinicians who work with addicts, teachers of courses on addiction, and the students who are learning to work with the addict population. The authors' integrative, mindfulness-based approach is a winning complement to 12-Step programs or Rational Recovery. Here are just a few of the virtues of this workbook:1) It guides the reader, in a very personal and engaging manner, through the process of identifying the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that underly and perpetuate her addiction, setting her up for success as this work comes together in a grasp of mindfulness. The first four chapters are like having a wise, kind mentor, sponsor, or therapist to guide you through the early stages, when life can be so confusing.2) It acknowledges head-on that people struggling with addiction have faced, and will continue to need to cope with, loss and the grief that attends it. Part 2, Looking at Your Losses, connects loss with addiction, guiding the reader to identify the cycles and anniversaries that may trigger cravings and lapses.3) It teaches and empowers through metaphor and mnemonics, ensuring that when the addict is vulnerable and stressed, he'll be able to draw upon the relevant concept or skill with ease. One of my favorites is "Embracing the dog", which refers to those emotions that we'd rather avoid because they're uncomfortable or downright nasty. Here's a sweet metaphor that anyone can relate to, and it sets the reader up for Radical Acceptance.Speaking of which, Marsha Linehan, founder of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) summarized the approach as "radical acceptance coupled with skillful means". This workbook cultivates the mindset of acceptance and self-efficacy by offering an ample toolkit of coping skills, journaling opportunities, and the kind of "homework" one can actually look forward to.

New insights into my daily challenges
The Mindfulness Workbook for Addiction had given me new insights into my daily life. I never even realized that I had addictions until working through this workbook. I have learned that I had become addicted to feeling bad and to believing that life has nothing more than pain and misery. Working through this book, I can see more clear about how I have let false beliefs turn me away from the better life. I had allowed my life to become bitter and became addicted to being bitter and seeing everyone around me as bitter people until I began to reexamine my feelings and see where these feelings of anger and distain were really coming from, inside myself. Now I have a new outlook on life and can see that life is really only what we make of it and how we view ourselves.I would recommend this workbook to everyone who has a lack of happiness in their lives.

A workbook for anyone struggling with addictive behaviors
This workbook is an excellent guide for anyone struggling with addictive behaviors or curious about how these behaviors may be having an impact on your life. It answers all your questions, from "What is an addiction?" to "Is it anxiety?" and helps you consider the impact of loss, broken or unhealthy relationships, and mental health issues, among other things. The workbook presents information in an easily digestible way and includes examples, relevant research, and short stories that make each chapter interesting and easy to read. The best part is that every chapter has several exercises that help you reflect on what you have just read and then evaluate how it applies to your life. This workbook is a must-read if you are looking to make a positive change in your life!

Using this inside a 28-day program with persons in early recovery. Good conversation starter.

Alcohol and Other Drug Addiction is a Disease not a Symptom of Underlying Psychological Issues
This is a pretty good book with nicely laid out exercises. The major problem with the book is that it takes the old psychology view that alcohol and other drug addiction is caused by underlying psychological causes - in other words that alcohol and other drug addiction is a symptom of some underlying mental/emotional malady rather than the "stand alone" brain disease medical science has shown it to be with multiple causes. This is a misleading and terrible message to give a person with addictive disease. The addiction impaired brain hears "If I can take care of the underlying issue than I can use like normal" While in fact it has been shown again and again that for humans with addiction, not misuse, not maladaptive use, not problematic use, not alcohol and/or other drug abuse, but true addictive disease (physical brain impairment) continued use will, in most if not all instances, result in premature death.

Incredibly helpful!
This book was recommended by a hypnotherapist I worked with. The subtitle says it all. The exercises in this book lead us into territory we haven’t often explored. It takes time to work through this but it’s so worth it.I really appreciate the authors’ work helping us go into places we haven’t explored and come out with new insights and a sense of wholeness. There is also a workbook for anxiety if addiction is not your beast to wrangle.
