Motion Sensor works with ISY V5.0.14. Desperately searching for documentation!
I have been looking at this "indoor/outdoor" motion sensor for a long time, but only recently got one, because I needed my ISY controller to recognize it. Now that ISY version 5.0.14 is available (as a beta), I took the plunge, upgraded my ISY to version 5, and added this motion sensor. But I had quite a few problems - some of which I am still troubleshooting. Here's some advice for potential purchasers who have Universal Devices' ISY software:1. Upgrade to v5.0.14 (or higher). Don't think twice, just do it if you want to use this module.3. If you want to use this as an occupancy sensor, you will want to change the timeout from 30 seconds to a longer time-period, and change the motion report to "on & off".2. You are going to want to change the motion sensitivity - otherwise it will probably trigger a lot more often than you would like. When I used the default motion sensitivity (7) with a 10 minute timeout, the sensor never went off! It turns out that not seeing any motion for 10 minutes was like asking a 2-year-old not to move for 10 minutes. It works a lot better with 100 in the motion sensitivity setting.3. I hope I don't have to believe the specs when they say not to operate this device below freezing, because I live in Minnesota - and outdoor devices have to make it through WINTER around here. We'll see how low it goes. There is a temperature setting in the options that I have lowered to its lowest setting. No documentation says what this does - but maybe it makes it work below freezing? We'll see.4. I wouldn't trust this device to be very waterproof, and the so-called "flexible" mount is pretty flimsy and not very flexible. So for outdoor use, consider a sheltered location and that does not require rugged performance.5. There is a battery level reading that hasn't changed so far, since the device is new. I hope it works because then I can program a low battery email alert.6. There is an signal sent when someone tamers with the battery or turns off the motion sensing temporarily. But the obvious way to defeat this motion sensor is to simply remove it - which is very easy (no tools required) and I don't see any mechanism to raise an alert if the device is removed.Footnote 1:After a few days I have learned this:7. The sensitivity change in the settings was not enough - it still triggered far too often. Then I read that the device has a jumper near the battery. Moving the jumper from one pin to both pins was supposed to decrease the sensitivity significantly - and it did. What annoys me no end is that there is no documentation for this jumper - ANYWHERE. For for that matter, there is no product documentation for the other settings either. All that SmartLabs has published are some slick and useless phone configuration pictures for use with an Insteon Hub (sold separately). If you want to get some serious use out of this device you will want a programmable interface such as ISY software . It has a LOT more capability than the trivial pictures in SmartLabs' documentation reveal. If only there were some serious documentation!8. Two of the undocumented - and currently nonfunctional - features of the device (revealed in the ISY software) are a low battery sensor and a heartbeat. If these nodes ever start working, the device would be a lot more useful.9. The battery, luminescence and temperature settings that my ISY picks up from the device don't seem to change, so there's a good chance they are not functional - just place keepers.10. The device seems to work below freezing so far, but it has not gotten really cold here yet.11. The fact that I changed the temperature limits did nothing to make the device more cold-tolerant. These settings are thresholds that are supposed to trigger a temperature alert - so for example when the temperature falls below a certain level, you can trigger an event to turn on a heater. I didn't bother to try this because I don't need it and I don't think its working in the software yet. However, I did note that the temperature trigger goes to well below zero - so I keep hoping the device will work through our Minnesota winters despite the fact that it's documentation says its operating range does not extend below freezing.12. ISY software is still in Beta, but it seems to be stable. I did have a few minor glitches in the upgrade process - some programs did not transfer exactly. Since the software is still in Beta, I expect Universal Devices to add more features to the motion detector and eventually document all of them. Meanwhile, SMARTLABS - WHERE IS YOUR DOCUMENTATION????

Highly recommend you DON'T buy this, especially if you use a Universal Devices ISY!!!
First, when you open the box, you find it has 2 battery covers. One is just a plain cover, perhaps so you can place it on a table, window sill, etc. Another cover has a mounting option with a bendable neck. Both of these do not have a good fit & finish because they don't close all of the way. Goodbye outdoor option! Reading reviews, it looks like this is the same for others. The sensor has 2 buttons on top, the set button and a motion button. The motion button tells the device to turn off motion sensing. The sensor looks nicer and the size is nice and it might have fit nicely into a corner. However, I would have had to stick it to the wall but the battery is back there, in the rear corner.I tried synching this device with my ISY but it wouldn't find it. After a little online research, the Smarthome website said if you want to add this device to an ISY, use its address and manually add it as a 10.01 motion sensor device. I removed the battery cover and the battery to access the device's address. When I removed it, a jumper fell out from an opening behind the battery. I grabbed some tweezers to get it back on the 2 wires that were sticking up. Afterwards, I punched in the address and added it to the ISY but the ISY complained it was unable to read information such as what type it was. 3 devices were added to my ISY with the motion sensor's name prepended: 1) Sensor, 2) Dusk-Dawn, and 3) Low Bat. Not sure what the low battery is about since it is brand new (and came packaged with a battery and a piece of cardboard blocking the contact to prevent battery drain (you just pull it out to enable the battery)...it might just be triggered when it senses a low battery. Clicking on the "Options" button in the ISY brings up a dialog with options for timeout length in minutes, an LED brightness level (from 0-255 as usual), Darkness sensitivity (also from 0-255), a checkbox asking if you want to sense motion as it is sensed or after timeout, a checkbox asking if you want the LED on, a checkbox for "On command only" and a checkbox for night mode only. I listed these here because some reviews seem to mention not having these features so they might have been added recently or they were unaware of the "options" button within ISY.I set up 2 programs. The first one says that if it is between sunset and sunrise AND the front lights are off AND the sensor is on, then run the second program. The second program says nothing in "if" but the "then" says to set the front lights on, wait for 5 minutes, then shut them off. What this will do is if it is between sunset and sunrise, let the motion sensor turn on the front lights for 5 minutes. However, if I had manually turned the lights on, don't do anything until I turn them off. Needless to say, it didn't work well. Tried testing the program with another sensor and it worked so something is going on with this sensor. Realized that I may have accidentally turned off the sensor by pressing the motion button on top when I was adding/removing the battery to get to the address. If the sensor flashed red (instead of green), motion has been deactivated. So much for security.I'm going to have to give this an overall thumbs down. Security is weak since someone can just turn it off with a button on top, it is not too compatible with ISY devices, you can't full close the battery cover making outdoor use impossible, etc.

Battery lasts 6 to 18 months (CR123A)...as stated in documentation. (Review for: Motion detector 2844-222).
We've only used our motion sensor for two months, but that is a lot of on/off cycles (3min timer semi-regular traffic)...works the same as it did on day 1. Sensor has been completely reliable, would buy again. How it works:--Links directly to scene/device (but can also update state to a Hub).--Motion activates Scene and Reset timer; sensor state is set to "detects motion" etc.--Once no motion has been detected for the duration of the reset timer, the scene is then toggled off and the sensor resets; motion can now reactivate the scene again, and the state of the sensor is cleared/set-to-"no motion detected" etc.--Has a light-sensor that can be set to ignore motion when ambient light is beyond a threshold.--Has an "On-Only" mode, i.e. Motion Sensor will never toggle the scene OFF.Missing features that we would've liked:1) "Off-Only" mode.2) Inverted Light Sensor:- e.g. "TRIGGER (as opposed to Ignore) when ambient light is brighter than x percent".3) Separate retrigger/time-out intervals.4) Enable/disable detection based on a schedule.**Most of these can probably be added by using the ISY controller etc -- some could have been added through an Insteon Scenes update, but that doesn't seem likely to happen.
