Pays for itself in one sitting.
I own(ed) two of these and a 7/8 oz version. I own several other pistol and rifle molds. I session of casting for a couple hours will usually yield several hundred good slugs, and a few malformed ones. If you get your temperature right, and keep your alloy clean, these should release without beating on them, while casting quickly. My setup is a Lee 4-20 pot, with a tray underneath the production pot which has a wet rag on my left side, and a pie tin to catch sprues on my right. (I don't have to reach up very high, and can quickly drop the sprues back into the pot as I go) I keep the lead at the highest setting or one down. After about the 3rd cast I will cool the mold every cast on the wet rag, until just after the sprue frosts over. Consistency each pour gives better results and speed. I tap the sprue plate off, and give a rap to the bolt while it is held shut, then drop the slug over a water bucket. It will fall out nearly every time without further hassle if you follow this process. The key is to keep the rhythm constant so that your lead is hot, and the core pin cools a bit. before you cut the sprue. You will probably also need to take the sharp edges out of the core pin slot with some fine sandpaper. This will also help with release. My first one produced around 1200 slugs before the core pin fell out. The stamping on the bottom was flawed where the core pin is crimped onto it's guide plate. Since I sent it back for warranty replacement during the late panic, I bought a replacement rather than wait. When I got the first one back, I traded away the second. Even with this hassle, the speed of use and savings make this mod well worth it. For hunting, I think the Lyman 525 is a better choice, since it is generally considered to provide a little better accuracy. As a plinker, I have started to prefer pushing the 7/8 slugs a little faster. This gets a flatter trajectory and costs a little less in powder and lead. As of late April 2014, loading either to ~1300 FPS using common components bought at retail costs me less than $.15/ shot. I can easily shoot bowling pins at around 60 yards. It's not match accuracy, but it is sure better than roundballs. I've done a few youtube videos on loading tips for these under the screen name of GunFunZS. Check them out and also the helpful series by FortuneCookie45LC. You'll be glad you did.

over 2000 slugs so far
works great but really follow the instructions to T. this mold needs to be hot before you start casting otherwise the internal pin expands while the lead is shrinking as it cools this iwll cause it to stick. If that happens just put the corner of the mold in the lead and wait for it to heat up and drain. If you try and force it out you will damage the mold. Also, if you keep it hot enough while casting, the slug will fall out on thier own or with a very light tap to the handle screw. If you are beating it like some of these guys are in you tube videos you you are doing something seriously wrong. take your time, be patient, let things heat up and you can put out a ton of slugs in no time.KEEP YOUR LEAD HOT

Love it.
Makes great slugs. Keep the lead really hot and the mold even hotter. After the first few slugs she will really start to shine and drop gorgeous slugs. I clean mine with some rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab before use. I then place it on top of my melting pot to heat it up and use an old white candle to lube it. After the mold is hot lightly touch the candle to the two "pins" sticking out of the mold along with the "ribs" that are inlaid on the inside of the mold. Let the wax run down the ribs and your good to go. Do read the instructions as they provide a good baseline. I love lee products and as long as you take care of them they will last a lifetime. Enjoy!

A real Slugger
This Lee 1 oz Slug mold is a great addition to my casting world. The quality of the mold and kit has everything that you will need to start casting great, inexpensive 1 oz slugs for that 12 gauge shotgun. I casted a few and took it to the range to test ot. WOW! I was amazed at the quality and performance of a casted slug. This is a must for the shooters out there looking to add a 1 oz slug mold to your collections. I highly recommend this Lee mold. It's a real slugger.

Work perfect with wheel weight. First; remove storage oil with brake cleaner, 2; smoke it well, 3; open the flip cutter as soon as the overfull booger change from mirror to frosted color, 4; use a small whood stick to open the flip cover and tap the hinge bolt to make the slug fall, finally; first 4 or 5 will be bad until the mold is up to temp. Wheel weigh in cylinder bore only ( pure lead in full choke is OK ) have fun for cheap!
