Q: What is the width of the ring where the two ends meet?

The width from the top to the bottom of the ring where the ends meet is 3/16 of an inch (less than a 1/4 of an inch). Very sturdy and not at all pliable. My daughter wears this ring daily and it's as shiny and durable as the day I gave it to her. She loves it and stacks with her other gold rings!

Q: Can this be used as a ring guard of sorts to keep a loose diamond ring secure?

Not sure. It's adjustable so maybe you could fit your diamond ring in it somehow.

Q: What is the material of this ring made of?

I'm not sure. I should have read up on it before I bought it. It's super cute and I love it but it lasted for a minute, if you like silver eventually ...lol
