In terms of instrumentation, repertoire and pioneering spirit, Seldom Scene opened all kinds of new doors for bluegrass. This 1975 double-LP is a progressive-bluegrass classic: brilliant spins on City of New Orleans; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, and If I Were a Carpenter plus Georgia Rose; Dark Hollow; Rawhide 23 in all!

This album has many good songs and the Seldom Scene are a great group ...
This album has many good songs and the Seldom Scene are a great group of musical talent. The first time that I ever listened to the Seldom Scene was in 1981 while instructing at the Saudi Arabia Naval Base in Saudi Arabia. One of the other instructors knew that I liked all types of music and we both listened to a lot of Classical music. One day he gave me a tape of Bluegrass music to listen to. It was the Seldom Scene singing the songs like City of New Orleans and others. From that moment on I felt that no other group could produce such a great sound as the Seldom Scene. Ever since then I have been looking to find the music by the Seldom Scene. I saw this live album and immediately wanted it. I a very glad that I did purchase it. I would recommend this album for anyone that loved music.

If you enjoy bluegrass, give this CD a listen.
This was the album which first introduced me to the Seldom Scene in the early 70's. My vinyl version has long since been worn out. Many of their best known songs are here, and you can hear the fun they have performing them. Five talented musicians, great harmonies, "progressive" style bluegrass at its best.

Classic for a Reason. Discover That Reason!
This album is a classic for a reason. Even if your acquaintance with bluegrass is casual at best, you owe it to yourself to listen and discover that reason.I'd like to make special note of Song #22, "White Lines." It's easy to say that every song is an interpretation by the artist, without thinking about the idea in much depth. Find Willie P. Bennett's original version online. Then listen to what The Seldom Scene did with it. You will never be casual about artistic interpretation again.

Good 'grass with a little acid
If you can accept urbanized bluegrass this is the ultimate CD. It's a long way from here to Ralph Stanley but the Seldom Scene impress with the quality of their music. This is a live album, but exceptionally well-recorded (especially since it was made about 1975). Every jack-hammer note of the banjo and painfully high pic of the mandolin comes through sharp, crisp, and clean. Although some may disagree, I enjoy the inane banter of the band and their weak attempts at humor. The SS even poke a little fun at the dead-serious bluegrass traditionalists. The music is outstanding, especially the opening and closing numbers. The SS clown their way through "Doing my Time" but the harmonies and the instumental solos are of near unbeleivable qualtiy. And "Rider" a version of a Dead song, belongs among bluegrass's all time hits. Bob Dylan's "It's all over now, Baby Blue" is another standout. I guess I like the SS best when they're doing a 'grass version of a un-grass song. One of the things I like is the exotic -- non country --sounds the SS sometimes get out of their instruments. Some of the notes they hit would be appropriate as back up music for "Star Wars" or a yoga class. You don't have to like country music or bluegrass to enjoy the Seldom Scene. They are quality musicians by the most exacting standards.

Top notch live recording
One of the best live recordings I've heard. The music is outstanding as is the the intro's to the songs. The band goes through a good variety of their recordings, both upbeat tunes and great ballads and harmonies. Only week point is the usual couple of people in the crowd being annoyingly loud and yelling over the rest ( maybe they were well oiled ). This cd is a really good one to purchase.

Ultimate album!
The first time I heard this album back in the 70's, my brain shorted out. For a week I couldn't work, I couldn't play. I just kept running these songs through my head. Even now, whenever I play this album, a surge of excitement and elation well up inside me. To me, this is the epitome of great music.Mike Auldridge, John Duffey, and John Starling weave watertight, startling harmonies, backed by unequaled musicianship. On top of that, they obviously enjoy their music and their audience. This is timeless music played by a stellar group of influential musicians. Although the lineup has changed over the years, and we all have suffered the loss of John Duffey, The Seldom Scene was--and is--the quintessential contemporary bluegrass group.I can't recommend this album enough. If you love bluegrass, if you're new to bluegrass, or if you're a lover of fine music in general, you *must* have this album.

Love this CD
I bought this for my Daddy a few years ago and we "shared" it. After I got married, moved out and started having babies of my own I decided I needed to buy myself one so I could let my babies grow up listening to some of the best music on Earth. I LOVE the seldom scene. This CD has a lot of their best songs on it. Can't say it's my favorite though...How can one choose a favorite with so many GREAT albums out there by such a FANTASTIC group?
