3/8" wide x 1/8" thick. There are 2 indention stripes down the length of the bar that make it difficult to write on which was my original intention.

Q: Would these be strong enough to hold up sewing needles?

It's pretty strong. I just picked up darning needles with the bar and shook it around but none dropped.

Q: Are these strips magnetic (the attract metal) or are they just metal strips and whatever I need to stick to them needs to have a magnet attached?

It is a magnetic strips which can stick onto any metal / steel surface . Hope that it answer your question . 

I doubt it. They aren't super strong magnets, but also the matchbox cars I tested wasn't magnetic at all. Possibly if you have magnetic cars, but a couple sheets of paper is all I hold down with these and they do the job, but not as strong as the magnets the board originally came with.
