a readable and comprehensive look at the distant reaches of the solar system
I was pleasantly surprised at the readability and high average quality of the contributions to this edited volume of current research in what is now called the Trans Neptunian solar system. This theorized region of the solar system was established empirically only a few decades ago with discovery of Edgeworth Kuiper Belt objects although long period comets were known to be from distant reaches as well. The book also covers in detail some objects currently within Neptune's orbit such as the Centaurs since they are believed to have originated in the Edgeworth Kuiper belt or other areas of the trans Neptunian region. Obviously research is still in beginning stages on this difficult to study region because the objects are relatively small and faint. Nevertheless it is amazing how much solid thinking has been devoted to analyzing and modeling the composition, evolution and orbital dynamics of these planetoids. If you have any interest in this topic, this book can be highly recommended.
