Pragmatic Guide to Sass 3: Tame the Modern Style Sheet

Comprehensive, Approachable, Generally Excellent
I was surprised that such a thin book could go both broad and deep. Even as a 10 year veteran of Sass, I picked up a couple of things I hadn't heard about yet.

Love it.
Fantastic format for a technical book.

Hard to follow
This book should be more long. The explanations and examples are not enough.

Well-written, but not comprehensive
This is expensive for such a thin book; however, it's clearly written and well worth the money. Each 'lesson' includes a few paragraphs of text and, on the opposite page, a couple of relevant examples.. The appendix contains a complete reference to SASS.My main issues are:1) The section on installation is too brief. Explaining how to install Ruby and how to install SASS from Ruby would have been helpful, since most people aren't familiar with Ruby. None of this is complicated, but it should be there. Moreover, there is no mention of using task runners to automate the conversion of SCSS files to CSS. Given that this is what makes SASS practical in a working environment, this is a serious omission.2) There is little information on the SASS ecosystem. Bourbon, Neat and Eyeglass are discussed, but not in much depth.3) Many SASS functions are not mentioned at all. Given the cost of the book and the fairly narrow field, I would have expected it to at least be comprehensive.4) There is a section on HAML, which was created by one of the authors. This is really just an unnecessary plug.Overall, my feeling is that the book is well-written, but that the authors didn't want to invest more than a couple of weeks on it. On the plus side, it isn't full of typos, like most IT books. Presumably a technical editor wasn't necessary, given the credentials of the authors.

The Essential Resource for SASS
So, if you only had to have one book on SASS, this is it. Written by the creator of SASS, this book is the very definition of concise, providing essential information clearly and in a few words with easy-to-understand examples.

Poor quality physical book
This is the first time I've had to return a book because of poor physical quality. The binding felt very fragile as soon as I opened the book. I was extra careful with it, and only opened the pages just enough to read them. The pages still came loose and started to fall outIt feels a bit unfair to the authors to knock 2 stars off. But the book was unusable and is being sent back.As for the content: I like the layout. They explain a concept on the left hand page with an example on the right. The explanations are brief which is usually a good thing, but not always. In some case a few extra sentences would have helped to clarify some points and fill in some gaps. The code examples are in different shades of grey. Colour would have worked better. I'm guessing the eBook version will have colour pages. There's no kindle version available, so I'll be replacing this with the pdf version direct from The Pragmatic Bookshelf website.
