Perfect for me
I've known about Wireshark since it was called Ethereal, but I never used it. One reason was that I disliked running X11 on my older Mac, but also I thought that it was overkill for the limited kind of network debugging I am capable of. I simply used tcpdump and if I needed to slice and dice something, I wrote scripts to tease out whatever I needed.Silly me. Recently I ran into something that tested my patience and required more scripting than I wanted to tackle, so I installed Wireshark. My newer Mac ran it without complaint and I immediately saw that it had the power I needed (and then some). But how to learn it? I found this book and, although the high price put me off a bit, I bought it. I spent quite a few hours reading and doing the labs and and even more happy that I finally did this. Yes, Wireshark can do things that I'll likely never need to do. But it can also do things that I DO need to do and (with the help of this book) I can do them with a mouse-click or two.Highly recommended!

Wireshark 101
This book is now part of my Computer Forensics library at home. This is a good addition for ITT Tech students in the Computer Forensics course; like myself. Each lesson in the book is clear and easy to understand, don't forget to download the book supplement on the wireshark.org web site which will help you with the lessons in the book.Wireshark 101, is written for Wireshark version 1.8. However, I have installed Windows version 1.6 and so far no issues with the lessons. Current Wireshark version is now 1.10.I'll update this review as I dig deeper into packet analysis within my home network.

Straight-forward, Clear and Concise
I've owned this product for about a month. I needed to isolate a problem we were having with our computer systems/network.I'm not new to networking, but its been a while since I got my hands dirty. this book jump-started the process. And I was able to elliminate the network as the problem. This is a hands on type of instruction. The examples with hands-on training were excellent. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that I had a bit of trouble tracking down the online course material. If you need to find a network problem (or elliminate a network as the problem) and you are not familiar with network troubleshooting, this course will get you there quickly. At least it did me.Many thanks to Laura Chappell.

Highly recommended! Must Have!
Laura Chappell is one of the leading experts on Wireshark! She makes learning the utility/tool an easy thing in this easy step by step guide to learning the basics of Wireshark! The labs are short and sweet and have great value and some interesting captures!I would recommend any security professional to have this on their shelves (It won't stay there long!) and use the best practices to solve network issues and security threats!

Network Engineering at the Packet Level
Pretty good book......definitely has helped me to better understand the why's and what's when it comes to Network Analysis via the Wireshark Tool. Book is a very great resource with learning how to analyze packets in a variety of manners as well as teaching you how to use the tool......you'll definitely gain an edge with facilitating Wireshark in your Network whenever an issue arises......as a Network Engineer never really dealt with Packet Analysis until now and this is the go to book if you plan on implementing Wireshark.

This is a great book for understanding Wireshark another winner for Laura Chappell !!
I have know Laura for many years when I worked at IBM in the Networking arena and she is one if not the best Network person I have known. I highly recommend any of her books and if you get the chance to sit in one of her classes you will love her to.!!! Her books are very well done and give you the tools you need to be a great troubleshooter and have a friend for life !!

Fun with Network Troubleshooting!
Laura has a way of breaking this "nutrient-dense" subject matter and making it palatable for even the most ADHD among us (squirrel!). Although bits, bytes, frames and packets are not everyone's cup-o-tea this book goes a long way toward "mainstreaming" network analysis for the "masses". If you are "good with computers" and you want to get a much better understanding of what's going on in your network "under the hood" then this book is a great place to start. Although, there is NO final exam for this 101 course, it WILL prepare you for 201 (hint to Laura).

Better than I thought it would be
I am a bit of a novice, so I was very nervous when I ordered this, expecting it to be written very technical and manual-like. I was wrong. This was written in a style as the author was simply talking to you. Chapter zero is incredibly informative, and I read it three times before continuing. The chapters are easy to read, the labs are straight forward, and each chapter has a challenge section which is just that. The study-group I joined goal was to complete this book cover to cover. We are half way through. I have learned sooo much in these 5 weeks. I recommend this for novice and experienced alike, as there is something for everyone in this book.
