Question 1

Would 3 2nd gen echo dots in one 1000 square foot home sync with eachother or would there be issues? Example, 1 order of pizza might turn into 3.

I am really happy about the ESP!  I have 2 Echos and 2 Alexa devices (dots are named "Echo" and Alexa kept her name).  Sometimes walking from one room to another I get frustrated because I call out the wrong name (glad I'm not married to her LOL!).  I've ordered 2 of the 2nd Gen Dots (for a total of 6 devices) because my home is around 3000 sf and sometimes depending on where you are in the house you need to yell at her to turn on the lights.  ESP will be a life saver!

What is the difference between dot and echo?

The Dot is a tiny speaker in a cramped case.  But if all you want is Alexa, she's a steal in this small package.  On the other hand, if you plan to ask Alexa to play a Mahler symphony (a composer renowned for his large-sized orchestras and epic-scale symphonies), then the Echo is definitely the better value.  But you can still make the case for the Dot if you plan to set it alongside, or on top of, a full-fidelity speaker. (I simply plug a 6-inch audio cable, with a 3.5mm stereo pin on each end, into my Dot with the other end plugged into my $1,500.00 stereo, which is infinitely superior to the first edition Echo.  Works out great--whether for Mahler or Duke Ellington or Frank Sinatra with Nelson Riddle's orchestra.  But take note that Amazon has announced a new Echo with better audio and pick-up along with a lower price--so even for a serious musician, who is bound to be penniless, the Echo appears to be worthy of consideration).

What is the difference between the 1st generation and 2nd?

This is just my opinion but I think the 1st generation is a better quality then the second generation. They both going to do pretty much do the samething but I just think it will be worth $50. I have a Echo, 2 Dots, and Tap, love them. At first was mad about the price being half of what I paid for but I believe the 1st generation will be a better quality, still do the same thing, then this 2nd generation coming out. I'm going to buy a couple of them but have those around the kids.

Is it required to have an Echo before a Dot can be set up and used?

I have an Echo, newer Model, 1 Dot and 1 Google Home Mini, The Google Mini for the same price as the Dot, blows Dot's speaker out of the water, no comparison there, it takes the larger Echo to equal or beat the Mini, there is no real difference in the Mini Google and the big one, so if you chose that one, save money and get the Mini, but Echo is far superior to the Dot, until you compare them side by side, you won't really know, but if you do, you would not want a Dot, we use the Dot in the Kitchen when we are cooking, I use the Google Mini in the Bedroom as an alarm and morning briefing on weather, news update and lite music while I am trying to get myself out of Bed, we use the Echo in the Living for turning off lights, playing games, questions, dictionary, weather, news, directions, most anything, You don't need 1 to make the other play, or work, Google wins out on the search and question part, as it uses Google search as compared to Echo/Dot's Bing service, Google is clearly superior in search, so therefore, king of directions, answers to all questions, things like that, but on youtube is a simple fix for echo to search Google, so that is great, Echo has 100x more skills to add via apps on the side to do more, as it's been around longer and has more people making apps for it, but many of those apps, do not work well all the time, example, when playing a simple song game, it does not always hear your answers, which screws up the scoring in a game, bad if your having a party and playing it, sometimes the side apps may even freeze in the middle of what it's doing, has nothing to do with echo, as Skills are added via 3rd party side apps,  something Google is working on getting more 3rd parties involved, but I love my Google Mini in the bedroom, we love the dot in the Kitchen as we don't need something as loud and or powerful in the Kitchen, we love the Echo in the Living room,   also bought an Nvidia Shield Android Box, and it has google built into it, so when the shield is on the Tv, it works and we use it in the Living room, it controls the Tv and youtube and other things while the Tv is on, in time, I'm going to bet that Google Far surpasses Echo, reason I'm saying that is, Echo over the past year or more if not longer, has done nothing to improve the Product, all they have done is make more products to play Alexa on, in the meantime, Google has worked very hard to improve it's Google home and Mini, they have 2 products, Amazon has I don't know, 7-9 maybe, so that's the difference in the future, Amazon seems to want you to spend money on new products that do the same thing and keep charging higher prices for each one, while google works on Improving the 2 products they have, I love that for the Future of Google and my Mini, I would like to see Google improve the bigger Home model so it blows away the Mini which is awesome.
