Q: What are the foam pieces used for? I do not see how to use them in the instruction book or on here.

This filter sponge goes next to the black water pump where the grooves are at, in order to protect the pump from pet fur getting stuck. Thank you for your kind message.

Q: Received this on July 27, 2020 and thus weekend the wall plug in started smoking and was burning hot to thr touch..how do we get this replaced?

I sent back my first unit because the pump didn't work, had no issues with getting an entirely new replacement fountain and it works perfectly.
