No idea why these would be described as blue/grey. They are grey. Definitely grey. Lightish grey. But grey.

Q: what is the length of these pants

They are, as described, knee length, or thereabouts depending on your player's height. If your player likes going with the traditional "high sock" look, these are your pants. If your player likes the MLB pajama bottom look, these aren't what you want. These are a true knicker style. Think Jackie Robinson. Hope this helps.

Unless he’s stocky, the youth L should fit.

This kind of material cannot be dyed. Not sure if they make in black. Might want to buy regular and have a tailor make them knickers. My friend did that.
