Review: Engaging read-aloud for students - By the Great Horn Spoon! is a hit with my 4th grade students. They love the adventure, humor, and fast-paced plot. It’s a great way to spark interest in historical fiction and the Gold Rush era. It ties nicely with the 4th Grade curriculum on California history. Highly recommended for upper elementary classrooms. Review: Rollicking fun! - Way back when I was ten or so, By the Great Horn Spoon! was the first Sid Fleischman book I ever encountered. My mom read it aloud to my brother and I, and we laughed and laughed and laughed over it. A few years ago, I read this aloud to my own kids. We also laughed a lot over it. I reread it again this week because I'm using it in a literature class for 3rd-5th grades that I'm teaching. And I laughed again. What a rollicking good adventure this is! It's a tall tale in the grand tradition of American storytelling, and I love it very much. It not only made me laugh aloud while reading it over again this week, it even made me get tears in my eyes when I hit the very last three lines. Wonderful stuff.

Swift Delivery
I purchased a number of these for my third grade students for our final novel of the school year. The paperbacks arrived in good condition and swiftly. My only negative comment is on the price—paperbacks are printed on cheap paper and bound cheaply. Paying almost 10$ a copy was a bit much. I wish there was some kind of bulk price break for teachers. Anyway, the content of the story is wonderful. I’ve taught this book before and the kids always express surprise over how much they find themselves enjoying not only Fleischman’s writing (quite comical and compelling) but also learning about the gold rush days in San Francisco and the routes of ships prior to the building of the Panama Canal. On the last day of school, my students had the option of taking a copy with them for their own. More than 2/3rds chose a copy!

written by a 4th grader (Adam Reed)
This was such a great book! I read this book with my 4th grade class. It is good for people who like CA history. It is an exciting book with an adventure to get to California and strike it rich during the gold rush. The main characters are Jack and Praiseworthy. There are other characters like Aunt Arabella, Sarah, Constance, Cut-Eye Higgins and more. I love adventure books with history in them. I recommend this book for ages 9 and up. It will inspire you to go to Columbia or Sugar Pine Railroad just to have fun gold mining. It might make you want to buy your own gold mining supplies so you can gold mine in the wild. This book will lead you on your own adventure!

I love this book!
I love this book! I ordered this copy to replace a tattered old copy. This is such a fun story about a boy and his butler going on an adventure to the California Gold Rush. I read it aloud when my older kids were younger. I tried to read it to my youngest daughter but she just took the book to finish it herself. I really love the characters in this book especially Praiseworthy, the butler. He's such a perfectly drawn character and I like to see how he responds to events. As a teacher, I think this book is worthy of any book shelf. Also, it will make a great read aloud to accompany a unit on the gold rush. It does a great, but humorous job, of showing how a gold rush can affect individuals or a community. Basically, it's a fun story that my kids and I love to read.
