Top Trumps: a huge hit in 3rd grade and beyond
I heard about Top Trumps from some of my British friends (who fondly remember it from their childhoods) and after I googled it, I immediately knew it would be a big hit with my 9-year-old son. He and his friends love the "Who Would Win?" book series, and this has a similar vibe but in a more interactive format.I got this "Ancient Egypt" set for him and a "Deadliest Predators" set for his best friend. When they arrived, my husband and I played a couple of games with my son to get a sense of the gameplay. It's basically a more-strategic version of the classic card game "War," but with the added bonus of some fun (and sometimes surprising) facts and interesting art. As parents, we got bored with it after about a half-hour, but even so, it's the source of some slightly-ridiculous in-jokes in our household now ("Aw, that's as bad as Amenhotep II!").The kids are a different story—they can't get enough of it. My son introduced it to his friends and they loved it. They loved it so much that we inadvertently started a buying frenzy. They're studying Greek and Roman history in 3rd grade, so a classmate's mom bought him "Greek Mythology," and his younger sister is thrilled with her "Baby Animals" set. A friend is visiting New York City this summer so he got "New York." A horse-obsessed friend got "Horses and Ponies." And my son's teacher just bought "Chemistry" for the classroom. The only problem we've had is that the kids get very invested in their individual decks, because they get to know the facts so well that they have a gameplay-advantage—and then resist playing someone else's deck, knowing they'll be at a disadvantage. Of course, from a learning perspective, it's great that they are picking up the facts so readily, without realizing they're "being educated," but it can sometimes require a parental edict (something I try to mostly avoid during kids' playtime) to get them to try something else.In spite of that one arguable "downside," Top Trumps are a huge hit with all the kids who have seen it, and I suspect it'll continue to increase in popularity thanks to 3rd-grade word-of-mouth. ;)

I don't get the appeal, but the kids love it.
The instructions make no mention of actually reading the facts on the cards, so I made up a few rules to include that. My kids begged to play this (ages 6-11). It was easy enough for the youngest to play.

The tidbits of info are fun and interesting and the game play is fairly quick
We are new to gameschooling and this is one of our many first. The tidbits of info are fun and interesting and the game play is fairly quick. My kiddos playing are 7 and 11. They ask for it to be in rotation constantly!

They love our Lightning Thief novel and learn a bit more ...
I use these in class when my students earn a little free time. They love our Lightning Thief novel and learn a bit more about Greek Mythology playing this fun and easy game.

Fun yes...educational no
Top Trump cards are generally a fun game of comparison. I purchased this set as a fun supplement for my boys as they studied greek mythology ay school. However I was disappointed with this set as I felt the names/discriptions did accurately depict the mythology.

I like that she learns while she plays
My daughter and I played this game and learned a lot! Apparently, the Top Trumps are really "in" right now. I like that she learns while she plays.

These are NOT trivia game cards !!
These cards are flash cards, they are NOT trivia game cards. They are pretty, the graphics are nice, and have facts on them, howerver not what we wanted. :: heavy sigh ::
