Carving for Kids: An Introduction to Woodcarving Paperback – June 1, 2006

I am a kid inside... I needed something as a tutorial and this fit the bill. I am starting out as a carver and this is wonderful for me. Baby steps is where it begins, right?

My Mom and my Wife are both wood carvers. My grandson, age 11, expressed interest. We bought him a starter set for Christmas and this book to go with it. He's using the book and finds it very helpful.

My 12 year old grandson really likes this book. He saw several interesting projects to make. There is a section on safety and also different recommended types of wood to be used for carving projects. Comprehensive and well laid out information.

I was pleasantly surprised to view this book and see that it was a easy read for children as young as 8yrs.of age. My grandsonswere very excited to learn so much the book had to offer. Great illustrations!

Good detail in the descriptions with helpful pictures for every project. May be tedious for younger kids, depending on their focus, interest, and motivation!

The book was well written and had wonderful step by step instructions and photos. Unfortunately, the first seven projects don't really involve hand carving. They have the children do wood stamping. They have the adult use a band saw or jig saw to cut the basic outline and then the child just uses a variety of sanding tools to shape the wood by sanding it down. Finally there are 4 actual carving projects (a duck, bear, spoon and a face) Without access to a band saw or jig saw to create the outlines, there is only really one project that my son can carve using his cub scout knife and a block of wood. I am going to try and have him adapt one of the sanding projects into more of a whittling project. Good book, just not what I was hoping for.

Nice book pictures are handy to view what the writer is talking about. I am excited to work with my son that is 11 years old that has been asking to carve of work with wood.
