Q: How well does this work for thick hair while having a medium to slightly longer hairstyles

If your hair is longer on the top it works fine. You might have to use a little more. Also depends on whether your hair is finer or course. It can work on both. You would use less if it is fine. Just play with it and figure out the amount that works best for the hold you want. Make sure you separate the sections as you put it in so the powder gets down closer to the root especially if your hair is longer on the top. It gives you a nice dry and matte look for a styling product.
