No, it is smooth with no grooves on the faces. It does however hold hooks extremely well, and is especially a great beginner vice. It is constructed well and performs flawlessly.

Don't remember the size of packaging, but the box the vice is in is 12'4'1.75". That should fit a pretty big xmas stocking :)
