Q: Will the base slide under a couch?

If you are asking whether you can be seated on a couch and pull this desk closer to you by pulling the legs and wheels under the couch, it would depend on the couch, I suppose. My couch has about 4-1/2" legs, so this would not work for me. The top of the legs where the wheels are attached measures slightly more than 4-1/2 inches from the floor, and this increases to more than 7 inches from the floor at the end of the legs where they attached to the central column. To pull the desk 6 inches closer to you, you would need about 6 inches of clearance underneath the couch.

Q: Is the maple fusion laminate a real wood veneer?

The worksurface is constructed of an MDF core with a high-pressure laminate on the top surface and a melamine laminate on the bottom surface. It doesn't use wood veneers.
