This book is excellent. I bought it initially because my daughter had a profound encounter with Jesus earlier this year and I wanted to give her a good reason and foundational principles for reading the Bible without overwhelming her. It’s been extremely helpful for me also, as someone who can blow a bit hot and cold on daily Bible study. (Can’t really tell my girl to do something if I’m not doing it myself!) The chapters are concise, clearly structured and written in a style which is neither too dry nor overly chatty. The writer provides a range of compelling reasons for Bible study and the variety of ways in which we respond to the Word - intellectually, emotionally, imaginatively, all under the guidance, inspiration and encouragement of the Holy Spirit. I did want to draw attention to one thing: Chapter 4 on discovering meaning has a section on erroneous approaches. On the part looking at over-spiritualising the writer cites an example of a youth camp leader encouraging young men to march the girl they’d decided to marry around the room seven times and then the walls of her heart would come tumbling down and she would agree to marry him -à-la walls of Jericho. The writer points out the foolishness of this approach, despite being funny. I’m afraid I didn’t find it remotely funny, I found it horrifying. I can only imagine the damage this experience would have done to me as a young woman - trapped, more anxious about God than I already was, and potentially shoe-horned into a disastrously unwise marriage. If either of my daughters found themselves in such a situation (unlikely, being too sensible) I sincerely hope they would punch any of those young men on the nose and tell the youth leader exactly what they thought of him. There is a serious point here - such an example of over-spiritualising, which goes hand in hand with being over-literal is dangerous, psychologically damaging and stunting, which I think the author could have at least briefly pointed out (not the remit or subject matter of the book as a whole, I know). I have known people shipwreck their whole faith having been bombarded with over-spiritualised approaches to scripture for years and finally realising the folly of it, and having lacked the teaching or guidance to see different layers of meaning and interpretation in scripture. Which brings me back to why this book is so good in presenting the full and grounded approach to scripture , employing mind, heart and spirit.

Very well written short book on reading the Bible. I recommend this book to others. The only negative point is poor quality of the paper and print. Since so much thoughts and efforts had gone into publishing this book, a poor quality of the paper used could only spoil the reader's experience

This a great book if you are looking for a way to dig deep in the word of God. Helpful in setting up a plan to do that.
