Leica M9 (Expanded Guides)

Helpful review guide with some more info than the manual
I've read all of the other reviews and its interesting that those who don't care for this guide book fail to mention that it does indeed cover more ground then the manual. It is, as one would expect, an "expanded" manual...which is pretty obvious considering the name of the book. So I fail to comprehend the reviews that are less than flattering when the author/publisher made no great claims that this was a plethora of untold M9 knowledge. So yes, it is the same information you can find in the manual but "expanded" in regards to depth of information on a specific function with supportive guides, instructions and visual aids to help a newcomer to the M9 learn about the camera. I've shot Leica's before in digital and film and I found the guide useful.Plus it does contain information regarding subjects such as lens selection, post processing of images, available accessories and other info that is not going to be covered in a guide. If you're curious, pick it up. Leica users tend to be a fickle crowd who pride themselves in being inherently brilliant simply because they own a Leica rather than being capable photographers. We all start out learning somewhere and this particular guide is a good start.

Leica M9 Book Review
I bought the book to evaluate the M9 as a potential purchase back into the "M" system. This book is well laid out and has color graphics of the points the author is making in each of his chapters. At this time, I rated the book as a four star as I have not finished my review of the wealth of information contained therein. I own a Nikon "Df" that I can use with my older AI lenses in the manual mode. I can do the same thing with a "M" camera and two lenses. Both cameras offer me what I am looking for in my photography. However, I'm still between the purchase of the M9 or a M262 to join my "Df" system, but I'm coming close. The task would be easier if the author offered a book for the M262 of the same quality. JPG

this book tells you more than the instructions says
this book tells you more than the instructions says, if you felt the instruction manual is not good enough, This book is for you and it easier to read and understand, it also comes with tips and cautionary notes Leica M9 (The Expanded Guide) the other thing the Book is in English written by a english native language Author, The instruction Manual would have been written by Germans for Germans, then have a version translated to English which is not so easy and user friendly understanding manualIt also comes with a brief introduction of the History of Leica which I found it handy to read, it does have areas where it explains in details of individul functions but not all.It would be nice it indicates what funtions can be used in certain settings, like in RAW settings

Ok but no much more
This book is a very generic look at the M9. It is basically little more than the manual, with no special insights on how to use the camera for best advantage. In my opinion, Brian Bower's books on the M8/M9 are much more valuable, and also have a greater selection of better pictures that show what you can achieve with the camera.

A Perfect Book for Someone New to Leica
As extraordinary as the Leica M9 camera is, the owners guide can be a challenge to read and comprehend. Perhaps it's the German/English translation. On the other hand, David Taylor's book goes to great lengths to explain camera functions in a simple and understandable manner. The book also tells the camera's story to give the reader a better appreciation of the remarkable nature of the equipment. I found the abundance of illustrations very helpful and I'm much more confident in using the M9. If you are new to Leica equipment this book is very helpful. If you are a professional and already very familiar with Leica's, you probably should pass on the purchase.

The book itself seems useful, but the translation to electronic form (Kindle) is sad -- at least for my computer setup. Especially annoying is that many of the insets like photos and graphs cover up some of the text, and magnifying or reducing the size does nothing to correct that. Nothing in any of the Kindle tabs gives info on how to correct this. From my perspective, it seems that the Kindle fold are rushing things or are lazy. Anyway, with such a setup, even three stars seems generous. The Kindle edition reflects badly on the author, and that's not fair.

There are SO few books (maybe even none, other than this one) devoted to this fantastic camera. While a lot of the info can be gathered from the User Guide that came with the camera, this book presents it — and much more, in a much more engaging and attractive manner. It's a must-have for any M9 enthusiast to have in the library.

Nice little handbook, well illustrated.
Excellent little book, better than the standard manual with the camera. But it does also cover basic photographic theory as well, which for anyone owning one of these should be second nature (well it is for me anyway)

an excellent introduction
I don't have the M9 yet, and I don't know what the camera manual looks like, but before spending some 5000£, I found it extremely useful to spend a few £ and study this expanded guide which is richly documented, comprehensive and easy to consult so as to have a better idea of what I was planning to buy and which lenses would be more useful to me. I would say a must have before buying the camera itself, because once you have the camera in your hands, who would care to dream about for hours looking at it in the manual?

sound
I find the manual from leica absolutely flat to read. This is not exactly gripping but is a little easier to digest and has occasional tips that would be easy to miss (though i am sure they are overed) in the supplied manual. Good to cross reference with information available on the web. Pleased i bought it - and for under a tenner it is hardly expensive. A fair amount of generic stuff but hey a reminder of basics is can sometimes make you think in a different way about things.

Leica M 9 Handbuch
Sehr ausführliches und gut bebildertes Buch als Ergänzung zur Leica-Bedienungsanleitung. Optimal wäre es, wenn es dieses Buch auch in deutscher Sprache gäbe.
