Great overview of the Church for newcomers
I really enjoyed this easy-to-read introduction to the Episcopal Church. I learned a lot from the author's clear exposition. He touched on many of the controversies facing mainstream churches without taking a strong stance for or against any position. Recommended for anyone considering joining the Episcopal church.

Very Insightful
This wasn't very helpful to me as a newly practicing Episcopalian in a non-traditional urban congregation. It was a quick, non-boring read.

good book for potential Episcopal converts
This is a very good book for someone like me, who was raised Roman Catholic, who wants to learn more about the Episcopal church and may convert to it. It contains a lot of helpful and informative material. I would have given it a 5 star rating based on the contents, but I am going to give it a 4 because the writing style is quite dry. It is very factual, but not fun to read and not very engaging. I appreciate the facts and information though so will give it a 4 based on that.

Fine outline of an apostolic church
As a Roman Catholic, I was indoctrinated to look at the Anglican Church as heretical. This book explains that the break with Rome was caused by economics, and not dogma. It also explains that the reformation influenced the church after the split, and that the Anglican Communion resisted the more radical positions of the reformers. Other works on the Episcopal church focus on the disability it had being the established church during the revolution. The book demonstrates the insignificant differences between this church and the R. C's.

A lightweight summary
The Rector at the church where I recently have taken a position allowed as how there are really no good summaries of Episcopalian beliefs. I read this book first and am now delving into Hatchett's Commentary on the American Prayer Book. This book is really Episcopalianism lite. It is, however, possessed of an annotated bibliography that would perhaps be more useful if the author's other works took up less of it. It is not necessarily an easy read because of the weightiness of the subject matter but it is interesting and might be handy as a gift to someone making a general inquiry into what it means to be an American Anglican.

Excellent for new Episcopalians!
We converted from another denomination and wanted to understand the background of the Episcopal church, its foundations, practices, positions, and history of beliefs. I found this book most helpful and an interesting read. I even highlighted portions of it for reference later. It provides an excellent overview of the foundation, beliefs and practices. This book was recommended to me by a priest as an "Episcopal 101" reference. I also purchased the Welcome to the Book of Common Prayer and found it very helpful and enlightening. My sister is converting to the faith and I've ordered both of these books for her for Christmas. Would highly recommend both of these books for a new Episcopalian or existing ones who would like a review of their faith.
