Has anyone had the chance to compare this with the open back Sennheiser HD598 which is similarly priced here on Amazon?

I own a pair of the Sennheiser HD558. HD595, HD598, and the HD600's. I also own the Audio-Technica ATH-AD500X and the ATH-AD900X. There is only a slight difference in the Audio-Technica ATH-AD900X and the Sennheiser HD-598. I think the sound stage on both of these 2 are simply amazing...rather, OUTSTANDING!!! Simply put, if I were stuck on a deserted island and could only take 1 pair of headphones with me, it would be the Audio-Technica ATH-AD900X. Why? Because they have a slight edge on the sound stage, they're somewhat brighter in the mid and treble frequencies, and the bass is more pronounced and responds better to my ears, and they are very light weight. But all in all, there is not a dime's worth of difference in the Sennheiser HD598 and the Audio-Technica ATH-AD900X. You would be happy with either pair!

Can you replace the wire or is it permanently in place?

There's no easy way to swap the wire like you can on the Sennheiser HD598

How do these compare with ad500x and ad700x? i play a lot of pc gaming, especially in fps where sound cues are very important. i have the ad500x.

Compare to 500's and 700's, 900's are pretty much the same thing. Unless your 500's are broken, it is not worth investing into 900's.I strongly suggest playing with sound equalizer on your 500's if you want to use them for gaming.

how's the bass output compared to other open-back headphones?

In my opinion, the range and clarity are better than the Sennheiser (HD 558 / HD 598) and AKG (K 701) headphones I've tried. In terms of the bass, I only did a side by side comparison with the ATH-AD700X. If memory serves me correctly, I'd say the bass is similar to the HD 598. If you'd like, I can go into a store and compare the difference again, but you have to send me $20, lol... J/K.
