has a design flaw
The battery compartment release is a bust. Even following the directions with vivitar customer service on phone, it would not open. (BTW, a step in opening is left off the instructions) It looks like it would be a nice unit...but...if changing batteries is to be a hassle, it has no place in my camera collection.

The camera worked great the first few times we used it in the water but then it began to have problems - It got stuck in the on position and the only way to turn it off was to take out the batteries. Also it does not come with an SD card or adapter (which is necessary for transferring pictures) and the usb cable is virtually unusable for downloading pictures as it is located with the batteries and once plugged in the battery cover will not close and the computer can't access pictures without power...

Solid Waterproof Camera
This camera has worked great for me. The camera comes without the micro chip or batteries. You need both to operate it. For what you get this camera is very inexpensive. I have used it numerous times underwater with no leakage. The reason I didn't give a 5 star rating was that there is no view finder. When you are underwater in bright sunlight, you can't see your subject on the view screen. You have to point and shoot and hope for the best. With practice I have gotten pretty good at this. Also in indoor conditions or any low light situations, you should use a tripod or support the camera (I rarely use the flash). Without support you will get blurry pictures because of the slower shutter speed and the lightness of the camera. You need to read the pamphlet that comes with the camera. The menu system is not intuitive. Opening the access door for battery loading, chip inserting and downloading pictures requires some dexterity. You have to continually hold a very small lever, while you slide the door sideways with your other hand. Because of the water seal this door is very tight. Some of the "reviews" I read for this camera included the complaint that the user could not open the access door and returned the camera. I think they either did not read the instructions or they did not understand them. A CD is included with the camera. I was able to access my model, but was unable to install the software, so I do not know what was included. I hope there is a user manual, because the pamphlet that came with the camera is very brief. I hope to follow up on this in the near future. The pamphlet does not explain how to download pictures. You have to open the access door and attach the included USB cable to the camera and your computer. Turn on the camera and you will see the normal "Vivitar" on the view screen for a few seconds and the screen will then become blank. You will not see anything further on the view screen. Go to the "file manager" utility on your computer and look for an additional drive or drive letter. Your picture files will be on the drive.

Horrible quality photos
As soon as I got this camera, I took it out and took a picture on the standard setting- the picture was bad with flash (drown out) and blurry/noisy(without flash). I turned up the quality to the highest MP and capture settings and they were still awful. I didn't test how it worked underwater; the FOCUS isn't very functional (a hard-to-turn switch on the side with two settings were up close and far away- no real in between to get the kind of sharp and aesthetically acceptable pictures you would save or share anywhere). Rather would buy a life-proof case for my iPhone......

Not a bad deal.
For the price, I guess this camera is okay. It takes basic pictures, with not a lot of options for variety. Haven't had a ton of experience with the underwater part of it yet, just used it while canoeing and fishing. Seems to work okay so far.

Battery Compartment Not Working
Cute camera - but I couldn't use it because the battery compartment would not open. I tried everything to open it, but unfortunately had to send it back. However, this was the first time I had to return something bought on Amazon.com and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the return process was! Thank you :)
