Use a CH340G USB-to-Serial chip, work great, and can be used with other 3.3V serial devices
These ESP-01S programmers use a CH340G USB-To-Serial chip and are more convenient than using flying-wires to connect as I previously was. I don't recommend activating the WiFi radio while attached, as the ESP-01S can draw a lot more power in certain settings than these adapters can provide; the USB descriptor is for 98 mA (under half a Watt before VBUS and regulator drops are considered). A switch is used to toggle programming mode (via grounding GPIO0), not a RC circuit.

Worked perfectly for ESPHome on HA
This was plug-and-play to install ESPHome from the UI of Home Assistant. With these, I could...dare I say it...RULE THE WORLD!
