This is a great tool for long haired cats
If you have a pet that is long haired or has hair that is prone to matting, you need this tool. I have an arsenal of brushes, combs, a Furminator, another dematting tool and expensive clippers for my 2 Persian cats. One of them is more prone to getting mats than the other. I just got this product and tried it out. They normally don't like to be groomed (they are former strays who probably had never seen a comb or brush before in their lives). She usually bites whatever I'm attempting to use on her and then gets bored and wanders off. I got her when she was good and relaxed and cut off a bunch of mats that she would never let me touch before. This tool works quickly and does cut easily through the mats. I will say that you do need to have a good level of trust with the animal and they need to be relaxed when you do it. If they start to fidget or get agitated at all, stop and start again when they seem relaxed again. I wish I had bought this item sooner.

Incredible for matts
Used this today to cut some huge matts off my longhair cat. It's very sharp and I was very nervous about cutting skin, but the tool is super easy to use. I worked the dull tip slightly into the matt, then used an upward sawing motion to cut through. I've tried a few different tools and this is the best, fastest and easiest. Plus it didnt seem to bother the cat, because it's so sharp pulling was pretty minimal

A little awkward to use, but works, very sharp
I found this to be a little awkward to use, but that could be due to the squirmy long-haired cat not cooperating more than the product design. If you can get your critter to stay still and let you slide the blade under the hair mat, this thing works great. Very sharp, get rid of the mats fast.

BEST DEMATTING TOOL, EVEN FOR THE MOST DIFFICULT MATS!
My Great Pyrenees puppy went through 3 placements before coming to us. When she came to us, she had several major health problems that took a long time to heal. These illnesses took a toll on her coat. Then, as soon as our vet got her healthy, heradult coat started coming in at the same time it was seasonally proper for it to blow. In addition, her coat has several different textures. It was very difficult to groom her because she hated brushes.Daily, she developed mats we couldn’t undo. The saliva from her dog park buddies just complicated things more. The hay from the dog park would get mixed in...ugh, what a mess!We found this tool while searching for a way to deal with her matting problem. It slices right through the worst mats without any trouble. It definitely saved her coat! With the help of a professional groomer, her coat is now doing great. We couldn't have managed without this tool, however. It was 100 percent worth the money!

Very good but not perfect
This mat splitter works very well and does exactly what it should. Almost 100%. Almost.I have a large "throwback" pom with a heavy undercoat much like a malamute. He mats quickly even when I brush him 3-4 times a week with a wire brush. This mat splitter easily slides between the mat and his skin, then I gently pull through the mat (moving the blade back and forth a bit) which breaks it up. After doing this repeatedly, I can use the wire brush or wide toothed comb to completely remove the mat.His back legs, under his front legs (armpit area), behind his ears, and his belly area are all prone to mats. There is no tangling really, it goes straight from combed to mats without an intermediate stage. The mat splitter and a wide toothed comb take care of it all. I use it proactively on the areas of his heaviest undercoat. It's thinned it out nicely, and they are not so prone to matting anymore. He's still fluffy as can be, just not quite as much as he was before. So why not 5 stars? While the mat splitter part works great and doesn't hurt him at all (he does find it somewhat annoying though), the area where the razor blade attaches to the mat splitter isn't as smooth as it should be. It sometimes catches a bit of fur and it pulls on him. Same for the back side of the blade attachment. It seems to be set right, and the screw that holds everything together is tight -- but it occasionally 'catches' a bit of fur and he really doesn't like it.Overall, using this is much better than using scissors to cut through mats (much safer, too). The mat (matt?) splitter looks like the Oliver brand "one tooth Charlie" I used many years ago, but it isn't quite the same. It does the job; I still recommend this product for dogs with thick undercoats, I just wish it had either a slightly better design or better quality control. Not sure which.Update: Downgraded to 3 stars because it continues to catch fur where the razorblade meets the handle. It's gotten worse with use; now there is a little tuft of pulled fur in that spot every time I use it. In addition, the tip has bent about 20 degrees. I've straightened it the best I can, but it affects the 'flow' of the device so it is not as effective as it was. Chances are I dropped it (pretty sure it did not spontaneously bend). If so, the fall was from desk height and it landed on a carpet. No excuse for permanent damage to the mat splitter. I'm now looking for a "professional quality" mat splitter and would appreciate any help in locating one that's better made.

Cheap Knockoff
As others have said this is a cheap knockoff of a fantastic tool made by Oliver. If they made the head slightly bigger and more solid, so you could actually replace the blade with injector razor blades, then this would be great! But you can’t change out the blade and it gets dull quickly.

Good for long hair cats too
We have an 18 lb. cat that is half Maine Coon Cat and has a thick and long coat. That means that even with regular brushing he can get some pretty nasty mats. This tool does a great job of getting splitting the mats so I can get them out without the cat getting too irritated with me. Just in case, I wear a pair of welder gloves when I work on him, but that is just insurance. I had one of these before and someone who I loaned it to (dog owner, of course) forgot to give it back. Glad to find these on Amazon. One thing I missed is I seem to remember they used to come with a couple of spare blades, and told you that they used injector razor blades - still the case I am sure for when the tool gets too dull to split mats. Anyway was great when I raised Samoyeds, and works fine on cats also.

Handy little tool
Excellent to get to the bottom of knots without the worry of catching the skin. Would be better if spare blades were available.
