A Must-Have for the Fitness Buff
You know you own quality when you get your hands on this pedometer. It's not cheesy like so many on the market. The instructions that come with it leave a bit to be desired. But good news! Customer support is great and you can get through fast if you need them. You first install the included battery. Very easy to do. Then you enter the time, your weight and stride distance. The latter is not at all hard to do. You walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance of those steps, divide by ten. Then convert that to feet and inches. There are calculators online that will do that if you have problems. My first ten steps entered ten steps exactly! I was impressed with the accuracy. The calories take awhile to enter but they do enter. I'm not yet sure how accurate the calorie count is but from all the reviews I've read, they're very accurate. This unit is currently rated number one in Consumer Reports.I was a bit surprised that I danced about a half hour and nothing showed on the aerobic steps. But I think it is rather touchy on the type of steps taken. It says that shuffling may not read and perhaps dancing could be considered shuffling. One thing that impressed me and is important to me is that it registered my steps on my Gazelle! Most pedometers won't do that. At least the digimax I have does not and it too is top rated. My Gazelle is old and the computer is broken. So this means a lot to me.All in all, if you're going to buy a pedometer, this is the one to buy --- hands down.I wish there were a way to count calories while weight lifting and other activities. But for most people this is the way to go. It will keep you motivated and help you in your quest for fitness. And it will give you a gage of your daily activity and tell you if you need to improve.I believe the motivation alone is of tremendous value when you're trying to lose weight, or get fit or stay fit. And this convenient unit will help you.I also love the fact you can thrown it in your pocket or just about anywhere and get results.Update: I put the unit in my front pocket and put the face toward my leg. I did an aerobic dance and it tracked the steps and calories. So it turns out it does track this sort of activity, which adds greatly to the value of the pedometer.UPDATE: 9/16/2007 - I had the chance to discover how well made this is. I accidentally dropped it on a cement floor right on it's face. Believe it or not, there was no harm done. Looked the same. Intact and worked as usual. I was quite impressed.UPDATE: 2/20/2010 - Guess you can tell I've had this a long time. I'm about ready to upgrade. But I've a few comments as a long-time user that may help future buyers. I find that this unit does not always record steps. That makes it less than accurate. Also, I've never found that it would work when I put it in my bag or carried it in any manner other than in a pocket. Moreover, it doesn't always record even then.Battery life is short. Typically a battery may last three months. Setting the stride is the key to accuracy and it's not as easy to do as one might imagine. I ended out using a typical user of my height and found that gave the most accurate results in my case. For casual use, I still think this is a good unit. But it's not as good as I thought or as good as most reviews have made it sound. I've compared it to the popular Digi-Walker 701 and find both about the same in accuracy but I lean toward this unit as being somewhat more accurate. By the way, customer service is excellent should you need it.

Great Accurate Pedometer
A pedometer can be key in helping to ensure that you get enough general exercise into your daily life. I find the Omron is easy to use, inexpensive and great at helping you track your daily exercise. The unit is the size of a regular egg, squished flat, and has everything you need to do right at your fingertips. Compared with other pedometers I've used, setup is VERY easy. You hit the SET button and guided prompts help you enter your details. Then you are ready to go!This unit is great. You can wear it at your waist. You can clip it on your belt or something and hang it. You can leave it in your pocket. You can put it in your purse. As long as it is hanging vertically, it is fine. How about accuracy? I had a Sportline unit that was literally twice as much. I took it and this Omron unit out on a mile walk, with a GPS unit. The GPS unit verified the distance we traveled. The Omron unit said I took 2284 steps which worked out properly. The Sportline unit claimed I only walked 1825 steps!! That's not just a small mistake, it's a huge discrepancy. The Omron unit has a full seven day timer built into it, based on the time of day you enter. So every day at 12:00 midnight it rolls over and starts tracking a new set of values. This might be a little annoying if your intention is to track just a short hike and track the details. But still, it's great for overall health. If you really want to track the details of a given hike, you could either reset the entire unit, or what I personally would do is just note the steps you were starting at, and then subtract it out when you finished the hike. That way you know your short term progress but also still have that seven day memory in its system.Because it doesn't track the "current" hike this also means it isn't calculating steps per minute or other time-related counts. Again, this isn't a big deal for me at all. But if you are solely using your pedometer for "short term" hikes and really want to see that number right away, this might not be the pedometer for you.It does calculate the calories burned based on the weight you entered. That's always nice to know! The unit is very accurate and works in any location as long as it is vertical. So you can clip it on your belt, clip it on your purse, carry it IN your purse (as long as you arrange it so it's vertical) have it in a pocket etc. This makes it very flexible.Highly recommended!

No se puede pasar de pies a m. Para mí no es tan útil como esperaba que fuera. Tendrían que avisar en qué idioma viene.

USEFUL
Excellent appliance. I followed Consumer Report's warm recommendation and am not sorry. This pedometer can be carried either loose in your pocket or clipped to a belt. There is an additional safety clip so that you don't lose it if it jumps off your belt. The consciousness raising a pedometer creates is quite extraordinary. Put it on as soon as you rise in the morning and you will be surprised how many steps you take just around the house, especially if you are moving up and down stairs. I wear it when I ride a stationary bicycle for an hour, bringing my total steps to over 10,000 for the day. Success. At midnight it resets to zero and you start over the next morning. P.S. 26/07/14 Re. "steps" on bicycle. I have since found out that bicycle does cardio and nothing for your bone density. If bone density is also your aim you need to put weight on your bones: walk, jog, climb stairs, train with weights/Nautilus, and use elliptical trainer.

excellent device
Excellent device very easy to set up and use. Great for exercise motivation as it also gives distance , calories and fat burnt. Go easily into a pocket and very accurate. Well worth the extra as the cheaper versions are useless.

Recommendation for this product.
I have had a number of pedometers in the past, including the Weight Watchers pedometer (I recently had to replace this one twice and the third one was still inaccurate - I finally gave up). I spent some time researching a new replacement and found that most of the comments about the Omron HJ 112 were favourable. I have found the Omron very easy to set up and change setting when necessary. I have sight issues and have some difficulty reading some of the display. Otherwise, I am most satisfied and would recommend this product. I think this is good value for the money. I have had this product for 3 weeks.

Not in Metric system
The meter does what is has to do, but can only be used with "lbs" and "inches". Also counts when moving around in other ways, not only counts steps.
