The Bag I've Been Looking For!
I have FINALLY found the right pack! While the Manfrotto 50 is more than I wanted to spend, I have to say it's the bag I've been looking for for a long time. If you've got big gear (a pro/semi-pro body, big lenses (and I mean Tamzooka sized)) this may be the bag for you as well. I shoot with a Nikon D7100, with a battery grip and a big, long Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM APO as my go-to lens. This bag handles that setup with ease. It's deep enough I don't have to remove the battery grip and gives me easy, pull-out access from the top even with the big Sigma attached (yea!) Overall construction is outstanding. Buckles, straps and zippers are all rock-solid. Stitching on the straps and top-mounted carry handle is as good as any bag I've seen. The large-ish waist-belt *can* be removed if you want (and I did) but the belt is attached with what can only be described as "Industrial Strength" Velcro. Don't be fooled by this... This Velcro is *insanely* strong stuff and the waist strap is "locked in" with two layers of it, one on each side. Removing the waist strap is do-able but it takes a few minutes of serious effort. Pockets on the inside flap are big and roomy to hold miscellaneous items like spare memory cards, tripod plates and all that. If you like a lot of tiny little pockets, each one designed to hold one specific thing, like your memory cards or filters, this may not be your bag. The bag has a rigid, squared-off bottom so it will sit upright, unattended. It also comes with a rain cover but the cover does not store in a zippered pocket in the bottom of the bag like I've seen on a lot of other bags; it will arrive stored inside in one of the main pockets. No big, but I wish it stored in its own compartment somewhere. The top flap on the Manfrotto bag can be opened just enough so you can easily pull your camera body free but when unzipped fully, the flap falls open, and stays open, unattended. The bag I'm replacing is *being* replaced because the main flap would NOT stay open like the Manfrotto does and that is a major pain in the backside. The interior padding of the Manfrotto is as good or better than any bag I've seen. The foam feels cushy, yet it's thick and solid. The Velcro attachments on the dividers feel solid when creating compartments for lenses and such; in short, the dividers feel like they'll stay put. I have not used the tripod mount but it's there and appears well designed and better than what I see on a lot of less-expensive bags. The Manfrotto 50 is not cheap, but it's a serious piece of equipment. You will not wonder why you spent the money if you decide to get one.
