Great story for fathers to their child
Great story for fathers to their child. However, if you are a single parent like myself you may have to eexplain that mom & dad are not getting back together.

A beautiful book that studies the world of the penguin from the viewpoint of a chick while it comes from the egg and into a treacherously cold world as a chick. Although it has never met its mother the small chick works upon encouraging its father to care for it by mentioning all the important things that he does as well as the occasional praise for the mother. The writing was pretty decent and easy to follow along. There was a bit of a natural rhythm although the book I was reading from had words marked out by pencil and replaced by other words so I have no idea who had previously owned it nor why they would think to do it.The best part about the book was the illustrations which were done so brightly and beautiful that it caught the cold environment, the dangers, the life of a father penguin and the beauty of the cycle of the penguin's mating life. The details were wonderful and didn't take away from the reader's joy.All in all it was a great book and a fast read. Some of the way that it presents itself may want an adult reader to check the material since it does go for a bit of a codependency look even though we are talking about a young chick who does need to depend on its parents. Otherwise this book will be a great read, especially to those who enjoy penguins.

Penguin dads are great.
Without YouAnother book about Emperor Penguin fathers, this one opens with a short introduction to how the male Emperor Penguins care for their eggs and hatchlings alone through the Antarctic winter. The rest of the book is told in simple phrases, in the voices of both father and child. Although the illustrations initially seem unremarkable, they are surprisingly emotionally evocative and children are sure to respond to the feelings they convey. Of all the books about Emperor Penguins for children, this is the one which is most appropriate for very young children. Since it also deals with feelings about the penguin mother who is far away, this book is especially appropriate for fathers who are primary caregivers.

Before the March...
Written before "March of the Penguins", Mrs. Weeks does a wonderful job in rhyme-writting pulling you into the small family of penguins to see what true family really should be (sticking together and weathering the storm). Buy the one with the CD...her song along with the book will bring you to tears along with your children and students.

no cd
The review I read talked about a cd, which is the version my kids wanted. The book came without a cd and I looked back and saw a note that the review was for a version of the book no longer published. :(

C.D. is great, however text lacks depth.
I strongly recommend that you use the C.D. along with the book, otherwise the text is flat and lacks clarity. The song brings the story to life.
