Fitting and Pattern Alteration: A Multi-Method Approach to the Art of Style Selection, Fitting, and Alteration - Bundle Book + Studio Access Card 3rd Edition

The 3rd edition of this book is just excellent. I owed the 2nd edition and still bought the 3rd due to the changes made to the pants fitting section alone (changes made to crotch curve measurement w/flex ruler) and am extremely happy I did as the new information changed how I was approaching fit in this area. No longer do you use the hip line that comes on the pattern, but you are measuring and marking it based on your hip joint line, also new advice as to moving some of the crotch extension up to the waist in lieu of adding it all to the bottom of the curve which has made a huge improvement in my own adjustments as it takes the bulk out of the inseam which may not be where you need it. There was new information about removing from the side seam if you add to the inseam as this causes twisting in pant legs and such....this helped me a lot as I never fully understood where this was coming from.This book was already one of my favorite sewing books I own (and the only one I would have for fitting if I could only keep only one), but the 3rd edition of this book is just rockstar in my opinion as it clarifies and adjusts what was stated in the 2nd (I believe due to their pants fitting seminars they conduct and have learned from). If you are using this for their pants fitting/flex crotch curve mapping process, I think you'll find this 3rd edition to be worthwhile and if you don't already own this book for general fitting, you MUST buy it if you are interested in fit for sewing apparel. It is just one of the best, and I can't recommend the seam method enough for doing adjustments as it works so well and is easy to comprehend. I'm just an avid home sewer however it's made a drastic improvement in my fit on clothing and identifying fit issues. I also highly recommend getting the 40" flexible curve ruler (I bought from the Conselle store online) and/or the Two Easy Tape measure to go along with this book as they are very helpful in getting an accurate map and measurements.

I have been trying to teach myself how to do alterations. It has been such a hassle to watch zillions of videos and buy books that show one way of altering. Then another book will show a different method of altering. It has been a confusing journey-UNTIL I BOUGHT THIS BOOK. This book was mentioned on one of those sewing videos. It was very expensive-but I am so glad I bought it. This book is amazing. It explains how to identify all basic fitting problems. Then it offers several different methods for altering the garment. It also explains how to alter that same garment if it was bought in a store. The directions are very clear. I am amazed that they could cover so many different figure concerns. The book is 500 pages. I took it to Staples and had it converted into a spiral bound book. It will be easier to use-plus I can fold it back. It was worth every dime. This is a most valuable textbook that every sewer must own. You would pay more than $100 for an in-depth Seminar on Alterations and Fittings. I bought a special plastic bin to keep it. I don't want the pages to get curved. I will use this book forever. I am so happy I bought it.

This is a book every seamstress should own. There are many figure problem solving illustrations and fitting suggestions. The book is expensive but if you are making garments, either from drafting patterns or existing clothes, I would suggest this book in your reference library.The companion to this book would be Patternmaking for fashion design by Helen Joseph-Armstrong. Fifth edition.

This is a great book and is geared towards issues like if you have a long torso, high/round or flat butt, low breast volume, wide shoulders etc. etc. that you will always have to adjust patterns for. It is not really for people looking to alter a pattern design like to add volume to a skirt or move the zipper from the back to the side or something. Ordered another book that does cover that.

This is the very best book on pattern alterations. If you sew garments, and use commercial patterns, will will need to alter the pattern to fit correctly. This book is essential.

This book is phenomenal. It contains a huge range of fitting issues, including the posterior arm joint adjustment which is rare to see in the sea of advice about the forward shoulder adjustment.Each adjustment has a diagram and describes how the figure varies from the 'ideal' (the ideal being the body type the pattern was drafted for, which does vary with the company) and what that fitting issue looks like. This is provided in a bullet-pointed list making it easy to read and digest. The book describes how you would fix this on a ready-to-wear garment, how to trial the adjustment on your muslin before taking you through how to perform the adjustment on the pattern using the slash, pivot/slide, and seam methods. It also provides diagrams on where to measure the body and the pattern so you can compare the measurements and calculate how much of an adjustment you need.If you're a complete beginner then you may need another book/video lesson to compliment the material as it does not hold your hand. However, it is succinct and complete. Personally I feel that the multiple methods described really has made things click for me.It is expensive, but it is a large book, and it would cost a lot more if you bought separate books to cover everything that this one does.
