Reading Rural Landscapes: A Field Guide to New England's Past Paperback – July 30, 2015

Great book

... but honestly I was hoping for more depth/new stories. I bought this after hearing the author being interviewed on NPR & to be honest the interview was more fun than the book. That being said I DO think it is a great "starter book" to roadside archaeology in New England & I would hope that its readers never quite look at a landscape in the same way again.

Purchased this for a friend for our hiking trips through the Maine countryside. She is pretty knowledgeable already, so I did worry she may have already known much of the info, but she found it quite informative! Recommend for the Maine hiker!

Eastern states, unlike the West, benefit from a rich treasure trove of guides for reading vegetation in the landscape, especially linking past human activities to their botanical legacies. Of these guides, Sanford's "Reading Rural Landscapes" is my absolute favorite! If I could give this a 6-star rating, I would. A must-have addition to your library if you are an outdoor enthusiast, historical ecologist, or archaeologist.

Truly a very informative guide.
