These superb live performances were broadcast from a hometown gig in Hollywood and also in Berkeley, California in late 1994 . Vocalist and songwriter, Courtney Love - influenced by an unholy trinity of Big Black, Sonic Youth and Fleetwood Mac - had formed the band five years earlier, in Los Angeles in 1989 with Eric Erlandson. Hole's first album, 'Pretty on the Inside' was an extremely abrasive piece of work and was clearly influenced both by local hard-core punk bands and by the East Coast 'No Wave' scene. Not released until April of '94, Hole's sophomore album, 'Live Through This' was a different matter entirely. Released just four days after Cobain committed suicide, the record was a massive commercial success. Hailed by 'Rolling Stone' magazine as possibly the most potent blast of female insurgency ever committed to tape, it eventually went multi-platinum. Although denied by the band, the rumour that it had actually been Cobain who had written most of the songs only added to the impetus. At the time of the 'Live Through This' recording sessions Hole's line-up had stabilised with Courtney Love on vocals and guitar, Eric Erlandson on guitar, Kristen Pfaff on bass, keyboards and backing vocals and Patty Schemel on drums. But in June, just a few weeks after the release, Pfaff was found dead following acute opiate intoxication, next to a bag containing drug paraphernalia. She was replaced by Canadian bassist and backing singer Melissa Auf der Maur, who appears on these live broadcasts and remained with Hole for a further five years. 'Live Through This' is, of course, heavily featured here - there are excellent live versions of all but two of the original album's twelve tracks. The album's three successful singles, Doll Parts, Violet and Miss World are all spotlighted. Then there is a wildly eclectic trio of covers: Duran Duran's Hungry like the Wolf, Goffin & King's pop masterpiece He Hit Me (And It Felt like a Kiss), originally recorded in 1962 by The Crystals.

Three Stars
For serious Hole/Courtney Love fans only. Quality recordings, but Courtney was a rambling mess.

Eh
In my humble opinion, the recording and songs are lackluster (the guitars are even out of tune on some songs), but if you're a fan, the fact that this radio recording even exists is fantastic. I would equate it to some old favorite bootlegged recordings I like to have, but it's not all that great to actually listen to.I see others on here are excited about it though, so take it for what it's worth.Happy listening (I do love this band).

Whole Hole
Whole HolebyRob JonesSometimes (and, on too many occasions) the status of celebrity is stamped without even a venture around the atlas of achievement. Yes, folks it is 21st century mayhem where doing nothing or doing the wrong things can come before doing anything of merit! However, are there those who place their artistic abilities on the line with a series of ill judged episodes or the reliance upon substances and bombastic behaviour that just turn proceedings a little or lot ugly?Oh! Yes! There are plenty who can fall in to the cesspit of controversy and we lost track of what their function or purpose warrants! The list could be endless-but, Courtney Love is one such character who becomes divorced from her standing as a performer as other factors take over and the importance of her music and messages can seemingly fall by the wayside. Her band Hole and the Grease your Hips Live radio broadcast of Californian shows from 1994 put the record straight. The angst, anger and aggression of Courtney warrants hate rather than Love as she howls from the deepest recesses of her internals to covey her calls. The core contents of the acclaimed Live through This are present with ten of its twelve tracks in attendance. The 69 minute set is of good quality sound and there are also covers of Hungry like the Wolf (Duran Duran) and He hit Me (And it felt like a Kiss) (The Crystals) as well as a pre-Xmas We three Kings. Other band singles and b-sides also surface in amongst 19 the tracks. This is a from the gut, in your face, bombard the ears experience which is not for the faint hearted! Asking for it and you certainly get it!

Grease Your Hips
'Grease Your Hips' is two live Hole performances captured by the radio in late 1994. Tracks 1-11 are from the Hollywood Palladium on 9 November 1994. Tracks 12-19 have already appeared on a CD titled, 'Live Through This is Radio Hole 9th December (my birthday!) 1994'. Each recording doesn't seem like a complete unedited performance because there is the occasional fade out as if something is missing. There is though, examples of feedback, so the sound engineer didn't seem too bothered to erase that. Oddly (and annoyingly), the swearing in the songs is replaced by a beep yet the outbursts by Courtney Love, "take a f*****g smoke break" and "louder f*****s", are still there. On the debit side, I'd say these recordings are adequate but nothing special (you'll need to turn it up), there's a little too much repetition ('Miss World', 'Asking For It' and 'Sugar Coma' all appear twice) and Courtney appears rambling and 'emotional' in the latter performance. In its favour, the first half is excellent, the choice of songs is what you would expect, the musicians (including a newly introduced Melissa Auf Der Maur) hit their marks and Courtney's voice is as powerful as ever. For Hole completists.
