An uncommonly fair assessment of Richard Nixon's profound impact on American policy and politics from 1968 to the present day. This book is all the more unusual and compelling because the author is a well-known Democrat strategist. Mr. Schoen captures the many accomplishments of the Nixon Administration (EPA, Title IX, China Opening and Russian arms control) and how he established the modern Republican Party, including its domination of electoral votes in the South. Nixon pushed the Democratic Party to the left and established a glide path for Republicans Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush to dominate presidential politics for 12 years. Mr. Schoen convincingly argues Nixon was the most influential president since WWII. A must read for anyone open to hearing more about Nixon than Watergate.

Glad I took the time to read it
A very interesting, and different perspective on Richard Nixon. It doesn't focus on Watergate, but talks in depth about how Nixon's understanding of foreign policy as well as his skill at building support from both sides of the aisle. The man knew how to work within the political system, which unfortunately most of Congress has no desire to do today. Glad I took the time to read it.Although I know notes need to be inserted to justify contents, this book had almost more pages of notes than actual text. Not sure exactly why that level of detail is necessary - this is the only issue I took with this book.

Mostly fair book on Nixon
Interesting premise and history, but there are date errors and other incorrect information (Ronald Reagan worked for years at "General Motors"??!)

A Well Presented Case
The strength of this book to me is that it is written by a Democrat. I myself have never had any doubt that Nixon stands out as the most remarkable President from Kennedy to Obama; and the author pretty well provides the evidence that supports my opinion. The author sets out his study in a way that is logical and easy to read.

The Nixon Effect
The Nixon Effect, by Douglas E. Schoen is an extremely fascinating book. Although he resigned in disgrace, his influence is still being felt today. I highly recommend this book.

he is a very good historian also
Since first reading RN's memoirs in 1983 at the age of 12, I have since read more than 90+ books written by or about President Richard Nixon; I always research an author and their source material before buying any books; while 95% of historians, pundits, academics and the media are/were professional Nixon-haters, some can be objective; but that category does not include Doug Schoen; while he may be a longtime Democrat strategist, he is a very good historian also; this book, among the 90+, is by far the BEST one yet. I highly recommend this to any RN fans, U.S. political junkies and history enthusiasts 1
