Quality axe
VERY fine workmanship. This is an axeman's axe. Very good grind. Straight grained, nicely thinned handle.

Awesome axe for the price
I own about 20 axes, including Hults Bruk, Gransfors Bruk, Helko Werk, Council Tool Velvicut, and Council Tool Woodcraft. This Council Tool Sport Utility axe came just a sharp, the handle has excellent grain orientation, the head is hung perfectly, and the handle shape is very comfortable. I would order this axe again every day and twice on Sunday. I am very pleased with this axe. Just as good as my higher priced axes at a fraction of the cost.

Great companion in the woods
Let me say, first off, that everything about the Council Tool Jersey Axe I purchased is a truly functional and steadfast tool. This isn't simply a Mexican-cast hardware store notion of what an axe is, it's a tool in every sense of the word. That being said, it doesn't cost much surprisingly enough, so we can follow this bouncing ball to find out where the costs are cut....the fit and finish is sorely lacking. Now, for many this might be a bad thing, but if you're purchasing an axe to begin with, you probably don't mind taking a little elbow grease and making it a nice thing to look at. It is made of Carbon steel in the USA mind you. I took a grinder, flapwheel etc. to make the cheek recesses more pronounced, sanded the handle and sealed it, and profiled the bit to make this tool a formidable weapon against wood fibers. So, out of the box, a little touch-up on the bit and you're ready to make chips and chunks....but if you have deep respect for the tool, I recommend spending a couple of hours and tuning it up.Now, that being said, I've taken mine out a few times after I tuned it up, and made a leather sheath for it. Off the bat I thought it was heavy and bulky and the handle was too big. But, I was used to smaller boy's axes and pack-axes you see, and in fact I found the size to be perfect and powerful and efficient. Once you learn to dance with a full-size felling axe, you can accomplish quite a lot. I recommend learning a bit about axe-lore and care before using it to fully take advantage of it's capabilities, there are some good videos on YouTube on this. I processed a lot of firewood on a camping trip recently and once I got it home, I merely had to touch up the bit with a stone for a few minutes, clean and oil it for storage. I think I'll have this axe for quite some time, and hopefully my kids will inherit it from me. Did I mention that it was made in USA???

A true wood chopper
I debated on the 5# or this 3.5# ax and went with this one. I could tell lifting it out of the box that this was a nicely balanced ax. It came sharp out of the box, took it out after work and split some wood with it. It did a really nice job and sharpened back up quickly. Very impressed with this thing, it splits like a big ax but I wouldn't hesitate to take it with me on a canoe trip if it was needed.

Great axe
I have a gransfors bruh small forest axe. It is great, super sharp, and well finished but it is expensive. When it came time to buy a full size felling axe I researched a lot and settled on this axe. Out of the box it is a great axe and exactly as I expected. You pay a lot less than you would for a Gransfors Bruk. What you get is a less finished axe but that is what I wanted. The axe comes with a very dry unfinished handle and the blade is not even close to sharp. But again, this is what I expected and was willing to compromise on for a more affordable axe. To finish this axe and to make it superb I will apply boiled linseed oil to the handle and sharpen the bit with a file and stone. After that this axe will be top notch. The grain on the handle is straight, the axe head is symmetrical and hung well, and is overall a great axe. If you want a great axe but don't want to spend over a $100 dollars and are willing to do some finishing yourself I highly recommend this axe.

Better tool than the average man needs, don’t settle for average.
Decided I needed a good felling axe in the collection. I went with the council tool for the the price. After I received it, I can’t imagine how another brand could be any better. The look and feel of this is amazing. The head takes almost a hand forged look. The handle feels like it was custom made for me. The curve at the end of the handle adds great traction. The head was set very nicely. The only way this could be improved on if the edge had been fine polished and the handle finished in a nice tung oil or linseed oil. I will make some small improvements to the edge which came very sharp. And I will do some light sandy and finish the handle. This is a tool to be proud of. USAI own granfors and husqvarna, and ochsenkopf. I would put this very close to those. But the price is amazing.
