Massive improvement in quality and understanding from Algebra of 20 yrs ago when I took it. Came with 2 workbooks as a bonus.

I bought this book for my son who was using it in school so he would have a copy at home and I could help him with math when he had problems with assignments. The good - problems/exercises provide good coverage of the topic. There are answers to the odd problems in the back. This helps him study for tests. The bad - the explanations are incomplete. He, fortunately, had a good teacher at school who provides good notes. When he didn’t understand a concept and I tried to help explain, I would look at the textbook explanations and not find definitive answers. The authors feel they should explain an example solution with guiding questions. It would be helpful if there was an explanation with an answer. I understand the spirit of forcing students to think but maybe give us a clue. Instead of guiding questions with no definitive answers, maybe they could write the solution upside down on another page so a reader can know if s/he is on the right track. This textbook is a lost opportunity. It could be better and it is unfortunate that this style of presenting material detracts from the good exercises.
