Symphonie n°3 - Kindertotenlieder + Interview de Kathleen Ferrier par CBS / Kathleen Ferrier, contralto - BBC Symphony Orchestra - Sir Adrian Boult, direction - Concertgebouw Orchestra - Otto Klemperer, direction
L**O
not very listenable
It is not surprising that people from the UK would give this release 5 stars. I find it terrible. The sources are 78 RPM with serious surface noise included. The playing from the post war BBC is sub-par. And the sonics the same (even for 1947 standards). Plus it is difficult to believe that Boult had much affection for Mahler. I expected Ferrier's Kindertotenlieder (1951, Concertgebouw, Live) to sound better but hardly. There are many great versions of the cycle nowadays.Even the interview is rather inconsequential, in my opinion. Except for the "Rape for Lucretia" brief discussion, and listening to Ferrier talking voice, which is quite marvelous.
