How is this for use in a fireplace?

Yes! We use it in our heat-a-later fireplace all winter. The fireplace box is a little small, so fitting the grill inside has to be just right. We also use the lid from a small Webber barbeque to cover and smoke the food. We bought it 2017. It is now November 2021!

How is this for use in a fireplace?

Don't listen to them. This will work great in a fireplace, assuming it breathes well. People all over the world have and do cook out of fireplaces for centuries. In the US we have lost much of our innate sensibilities. Yes, you will need to mind the amount of fat coming from the cooking items but if you are mindful you will be fine.

Would this product be suitable to place on top of a gas grill's existing grates? I need something to keep my food off of dirty shared grills. Thanks

It would be tricky. You would need to put bricks underneath the narrow legs so that they don't fall through the gas grill grates.
