Highly strung absent-mindedness
OK. I've been playing mandolin for over 20 years, and I NEVER break strings when I'm tuning up. I put new strings on my mandolin January 1. It was January 20 when this happened. I was using a digital tuner. Well, for some reason, after getting the two G strings right, and the two D strings right, and the first A string right, my hand got disoriented on the peghead and I thought I was tightening up the second A string, but my fingers were actually turning the tuning peg on the first E string. I didn't bother to check with the neighboring string. So I was mindlessly wondering why the "A" string seemed so out of tune...why it was so hard to reach A? Actually, I was turning the E string tighter and tighter towards an octave above the usual A (on the third string). So, of course the poor, overworked E string broke. So dumb of me. I didn't have any extra strings--since I NEVER break strings. So I played a 45 minute gig with just one E string. Serves me right. Bought this single E string to correctly tune with the other non-broken E string. Let this be a lesson! Never lose focus when you are tuning strings and ALWAYS carry extra strings. Now, I travel with a full set of J74s just in case.

Sweet sounding Strings
The first time I played my Mandolin it had strings on it that made the whole experience make me no longer want to play it. I immediately broke the E string while tuning it and than purchased a new set of strings. I immediately broke the E string again. So this time I purchased several D'Addario single E strings. Love not have to buy a new "set" of stings for just one string. I have had very good luck with the D'Addario and will only purchase this brand of strings again. They produce a beautiful tone.

Broke on me.
Maybe it's me. But this and all the .011 strings I've bought have broken while first tuning. Or shortly after. .010 strings don't have this problem. Maybe if your mandolin is cheap it's better to use a heavier gauge.

"Hard to get just one."
Very few sources on line or on the street have single mandolin strings. Everybody who has played for a few years has complete sets laying around, minus the one you always break. Think of it as a form of conservation.

Good quality
In the past I've always dreaded having to change a string on a mandolin. This time, due to the quality of the string, the work was made so much simpler.
