It's a works
I have been looking for a shoe with a Velcro closure to replace my Avia, and had tried several, even another Avia. This one fits comfortably and I like everything about it except it seems to have a lowered heel.My right foot is larger than my left, and thus I have an issue. Sizing is so variable amongst shoe brands, and even within a brand. I take a 7.5 on left and an 8 on right--so it is always a compromise. Physical shoe stores don't seem to have depths and breadth of inventory anymore so it is difficult.I had an old standby but it got discontinued, and quality always deteriorates even if can get the same item as before. Sigh!Buying a shoe is more difficult than buying a car, perhaps even as difficult as buying a mattress.

Very Nice Walking Shoes
I got these shoes to have something easier to fasten after my hip surgery. Oddly, I went to a large local shoe warehouse first, but they didn't have a single pair of men's walking shoes with Velcro closures! These shoes have been great. I wanted them just a bit large to accommodate any post-op swelling, and they have been perfect. I usually wear 11's, and these 11 1/2's have been ideal, just slightly loose to allow for swelling and to make them easier to get on. They are still snug enough when the Velcro is fastened securely. I have not found the straps to be too short, possibly since I got slightly oversized shoes. They have been very comfortable to wear, and I use them every day in my rehab walks. I am up to 2 mi/day on city streets and they provide very good support and cushioning. The uppers are of very good quality materials and they are quite attractive as walking shoes go. The soles provide a secure grip. Overall a very satisfactory purchase.

Not Great, but not bad
I've wore New Balance shoes for probably about the last 15 years. The past few years I hadn't wore them so regularly. I just had a pair i used as my dirty shoes.I got these because where I work, various oils get on our shoes. After about a month, your shoe strings are so saturated by oil, that everytime you tie your shoes, you got to wash your hands because they're marked up with oil. That's why i went with Velcro. The shoe itself. Not the New Balance I remember. Since I hadn't bought a pair of NB in about 3 years, I tried on a pair at the shoe store to verify my sizing. I had to go a half size larger than what I used to wear. The pair as a 500 series shoe selling for $50. It was everything I remembered about a NB shoe. It was like walking on a cloud. Anyone who buys New Balance shoes knows that feeling, it's so sweet. If that shoe I tried on had velcro, I would've gotten it. Knowing my size, I got home and ordered these . . . a 400 series shoe for $60. Not thrilled about the price, but it's velcro and stores around here don't carry velcro.I get the shoe, and try it on and it fits perfect, but there's no, "walking on a cloud" feeling. It feels like a basic $30 walmart shoe. It's nothing like the new balance I remember. I wonder if I should have tried the 500 series shoe that sells on here for the same price, it's assembled in America also. I went with this because I liked the look of it better but if I had it to do over, I'd probably try the other one.Don't get me wrong, they don't make my feet hurt, they just lack that feel of comfort that's usually synonymous with New Balance.

Great Buy
Because these shoes did not cost an arm and a leg, I was a little concerned about the purchase. However, after I removed them from the box and tried them on, I was very pleased. They are comfortable and well made. I have not had any problem with the velcro closures. I recently did some traveling which required a lot of walking on uneven surfaces. They worked great. They have enough support that the foot stays comfortably in place. I will acknowledge, however, that I purchased a pair of Dr. Scholls heal support inserts to deal with the walking conditions, and they really helped. With that combination, I would not look for any other pair of walking shoes.

Satisfied with fit and appearance
I ordered these shoes as replacements for a similar pair of Avia shoes that have split on both sides at the front and are not repairable. The New Balance shoes cost about half of what I paid for the Avias. They have OK arch support but not quite as good as the Avias and overall they do not appear as well made. As reported by others, the top strap is a bit short but it's not too short. The Avia straps are much longer and more appropriate. Normally I wear a 9D. New Balance recommended a 9 2E and that size is perfect. I was disappointed that the Avias only lasted about 18 months of regular (two or three times a week) wearing. Considering their price, if these New Balance shoes last as long as the Avias, I'll be happy.

Shoes were as expected, although a little too big
I ordered these shoes because my previous tennis shoes were extremely worn down - they were over 10 years old! I wanted a shoe that was easy to take on and off, which is why I went with the velcro straps instead of traditional lace ups. I am glad I made that decision, because I have to take my shoes on and off quite frequently. The shoe is a little too big. I ordered a 10, but I really wear a 9 1/2.I ordered a half size larger than normal because I read on other reviews of New Balance that their shoes run 1/2 size too small. The larger size does not bother me because it is not a very big difference. The shoe is very comfortable to wear. I do like it - and the price was excellelent.

Good comfortable shoe.
I have been a New Balance customer for years. I like the feel of their shoes for casual usage. The size is not what they were in the past. Be sure and order a size larger for the best fit. I used to wear a 9 EEE, now I wear their 10 EEEE and they fit fine. The soles wear better than the stitching for me. Mine always come apart at the sides after a year or so of constant usage. I get catalogs from a shoe company and find the ones I like then come to Amazon and buy them for the same or lower price. Ordering from the catalog takes two weeks or more to get the shoes but with Prime I get them in two work days.
