Worth it for Disc 2 ALONE!
I'm not a HUGE BJH fan, although I do like them and own six or seven albums. "Gone to Earth" to me was their "Sgt. Pepper's...", their "Dark Side of the Moon", their "12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus", etc. but the absolutely crap audio quality and terrible mix on any version of it released until now did a great job to hide that fact. This 3-disc rescues "GTE" from purgatory and is absolutely fabulous! It's worth it for Disc 2 alone, a modern remix that is truly a remix -- songs such as "Love is Like a Violin" no longer have two vastly different volume levels where you literally used to have to toggle the volume knob back and forth between "I can't hear it" and "Wow did that get loud!"VERY cool segues appear, for example, between "Hard Hearted Woman" and Woolly's "Sea of Tranquility". New instruments appear, instruments already there are clear and crisp as if someone took the mittens of the recording mics! Disc 1 shows similar correction, but Disc 2 is the reason to invest in this reissue if you loved the original but hated the audio quality. Wow, listen to the fade on "Taking Me Higher! I haven't looked at the credits but whoever did and and the equipment they used to do it with deserve Grammy's for CPR !!!

Great prog-rock, Moody Blues style
By 1977, BJH was struggling to get noticed in America, but the band's album "Octoberon," released the same year as this disc, finally hit the charts, if only at No. 174. "Gone to Earth" is just as good, featuring the standout songs "Hymn," "Sea of Tranquility" and "Poor Man's Moody Blues"--a parody of "Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues that you have to hear to believe. The new CD adds five bonus tracks, including "Lied" (previously unreleased and overlooked), "Hymn" (single version) and "Medicine Man" (live). A good middle place to start with this still-unknown band.

Something New. . . Something Different
Here's an interesting band to review. Probably not too well known here in the states. A friend's wife turned me on to this band. She's from Germany, and tells me, that she was a fan of this group, while she was living there. I thought that the band's name was rather unique, and decided to explore their music, and delve into their background. Their name comes from three different sources. . . Barclay is the bank in England, where the band is originally from. . . James is the name of their singer. . . Harvest refers to the fact that they, at one time, were all living in an old farmhouse. "Gone To Earth" is the fourth album that I have bought, that this band has recorded. I have come to like their music alot, and would compare it to Alan Parsons Project's "I Robot" or "Tales of Mystery and Imagination". . . The stories of Edgar Allen Poe. One of Barclay James Harvest's songs that comes to mind is a piece titled "Moon Girl". It's very melodic. Some of the album titles that I have been fortunate enough to aquire are "Everyone is Everybody Else", "Time Honoured Ghosts", "Live Tapes", and "Gone to Earth". Sometimes it's a good thing, to open your mind, to new and different music. . . music is like a box of chocolates. . . you never know what you'll get. Check this band out.

Be Different -- Don't Overlook this Masterpiece!
This is one of those true gems that commercialized radio swept under the carpet -- choosing instead to play predictable swill, all in 4:4 time. Barclay James Harvest is a great band that has often released 'uneven' albums that haven't helped make their case as a great band. But this album is at the top of the heap when it comes to brilliant material. 'Hymn' and 'Poor Man's Moody Blues' are superb, as is Wooly Wolstenholme's Mellotron-laced 'Sea of Tranquility.' A beautiful album; lush, orchestral and at times very cutting -- this is the band at their very best. Once you play this album, you'll see why many BJH fans have stayed with the band from the late 60's until today. Be different -- don't overlook this orchestral rock masterpiece! Help correct the error made by radio programmers in the late 70's. :)

Very very good listening
I bought the vinyl version of this album years ago because I liked the album art, and it was always a favorite. Finding it so much later on CD was great. This is a very Moody-Blues-ish sounding set of songs with strong melodies and excellent quality acoustics. I've tried other albums by this group but this is the best in my opinion. It's one of those albums that just never gets old.

Nice remix effort!
The remixed/remastered tracks sound amazing. More detail in guitar strumming while less harsh at the same time. Wonderful.

Good but not great
Another enjoyable album from Barclay James Harvest. Their loyal fans should enjoy this selection of music.

If you're buying this you'll probably be replacing/upgrading rather than exploring BJH for the first time so you probably know exactly what you're going to hear - classic material that underpinned their rapid growth in success in Europe. The booklet includes some quaint photos and a nice essay giving a bit of extra background to the context of the album's creation. Menu navigation and visual accompaniments on the DVDA are a little bit basic and it could do with losing the initial splash screen that could become annoying with frequent use. Also it would have been nice to have the additional mixes from Discs 1 & 2 included on the DVD rather than having to juggle discs

Everyoneとライブアルバムばかりを聴いていました…洗練された音になりつつある段階ですかね?何故か、アマゾンですぐ買えるので、はまってしまいました!
