Frank Gambale -- Improvisation Made Easy: An Improvisation Course for Intermediate to Advanced Guitarists, Book & Online Audio

Well laid out... but.. easier...!
I have several Frank Gambale books... and as always, they are well written and cover the material thoroughly enough. As I mentioned in the title, but... easier! (well this is the reason for the four star rather than five star rating). The first topic dives headlong into the modes, E mixolydian to be precise and chugs along from there. All well and good if you have some theory under your belt but if not, you will find the going a little tough. Even for well seasoned players, unless your are relatively conversant with theory, you might get lost and lose interest in this book. Which is a shame as it really does provide a good knowledge of scales and modes to enable some cool improvisation. The examples given by Frank Gambale are tasteful with the exception that most of the licks and improvisational lines are predominately sixteenth notes... A slightly wider musical palate might have been useful if you are not contemplating being a shredder... Say for example a blues inspired feel and or a jazzier version rather then tight note shred like approach. In any case, a great book that led me to another avenue of guitar playing (improvisation) that I have avoided for years... (due primarily because of lack of knowledge). I found that once I revised and looked up some of the theory to help me simplify things, Franks lesson's became much more usable... and enjoyable.

Best Resource Ever
I guess everyone steps in at different levels. I too have boxes of books that were not a good fit but I've found Frank Gambales books to be one of the best resources out there. Scales and arpeggios are basic tools in all forms of music. I find the content in Improvisation Made Easier be perfectly presented and exactly what I was looking for in terms of improvising using those tools. If the material in this book is over your head then.......learn your scales and arpeggios. Pick up copies of Gambales Technique Books I and II. As with all his work, the lessons are explained in detail and the music examples are creative and spot on. What a great player. What a great teacher! I'd love to see solo transcriptions of his discography, where can I buy those?

Another Gambale Gem
Fans of Frank Gambale's playing can get into his head to see some of his approaches in modal playing. Highly recommended. I would probably go through the Technique I and Technique II as prerequisite books first before this tackling one, his ideas will make more sense if you are not well-grounded in music theory.

A real shredder!
Great book for learning improv, warning it's fairly advanced but lots here to learn from Frank he's a real shredder!

Very good!
I find the lesson very useful. I think that every beginner must go through this stuff in order to learn some fundamental aspects of music.

Book was damaged (ripped and water? damaged)
The book arrived quick enough and was packed with another book. This book rear cover was ripped and there was wear marks on the front and back covers/scratches etc... looks like it has had a hard life. The internal pages appeared fine....but for that price I expect a book to not have a rip and water damage, scratches and spine wear. The other book it was packed with (Brent Mason - Hard Wired) was fine - although both books were packaged in an envelope and not the standard book box that protects books. I submitted a refund for the Frank Gambale book as a replacement could not be organised.

The best Frank Gambale book
This is Frank's most musical book to date. He presents a lot of licks that can be played over various chords and chord progressions. He gives explanations as to the scales, modes or arpeggios being used. The licks aren't just straight up and down scales etc, they are musical ideas which you can easily integrate into your own playing. The licks are quite advanced and will give your economy picking a work out. Some of Frank's fingerings are quite idiosyncratic so you may find yourself readjusting the location of certain notes to make things easier. If you're a beginner, or an early intermediate player, then this book is going to be extremely challenging. If you're late intermediate to advanced you should be able to understand the theory behind the licks, but playing them will give you a challenge and something to work towards.
