Iconic Sci-Fi Movie Probably best left alone.
Spielberg was always unhappy with a) the original version - wanting a later release so he could have another 6 months to edit it to perfection... and b) the 2nd version (studio version) because he so disliked the shots inside the mother ship at the end.So finally, years later, we end up with this. Supposedly what Spielberg always wanted. Is it perfection? No. No it's not. Some parts no longer flow - editing for editing's sake.It has the look of a movie, and I stress... only in parts, where the vision has been lost.I must confess, the studio's version was perfection for me. I was more than willing to be sucked into the glitz of the mother ships interior.Having said all this, Close Encounters is a spine tingling and astonishing beautiful work of art no matter which version watch.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS 2 DISC SPECIAL EDITION 2007 BLU RAY
Some of the reviews here on Amazon are confusing to say the least. Different versions of the BluRay, and reviews for a book about "Game of Thrones". To be clear...This review is for the BluRay 2007 release with the silvery front cover, not the "mother ship" multi coloured front page from 2012. I have to say that for a BluRay for such a classic well known film the quality is disapointing. Yes, it is very good in a good DVD kind of way, but, somehow I expected better. Perfectly acceptable and a good Panavision transfer, bars top and bottom, good sound and variable subtitles (not always clear when on a bright background, but my wife managed). I watched the Theatrical Version, so can't comment on "Special Edition" or Director's cut (tho I have seen Director's Cut on DVD and prefer the theatrical version). Loads of extras but, sorry, not seen yet. On seeing this back in it's original Cinema release, I was left genuinely speechless. The whole film had a profound effect on me, but watching it now some 40 odd years later it wassn't quite so wonderful. My problem was Dreyfus and the way his character was written especially the "Devil's Horn" sequence in his house. Terri Garr, who I love, seemed to be half asleep, but the rest of the cast were all good. I still find the appearence of the "Mother Ship" to be mindblowing, and this last 30 minutes or so make the whole film still well worth watching. After all, it was, then, a hit, and it still is a classic of the genre, and it is a good VFM price.

One for the SF Enthusiast's collection
The first time I saw this in the cinema the sound was awful and the number of people all around eating popcorn and crisps talking and slurping all through the film completely ruined it for me. What a mistake on my part. But then I saw it on TV in the peace of home, and knew I had to buy the DVD, and fortunately in 2003 this was long enough after the initial release to be able to buy this two disc Collectors Edition with almost all the cut/restored/edited scenes somewhere in the package if not in the film itself, and here the film has the correct ending. The surround sound is excellent (especially when turned up loud) and the imagery in the superb photography is captivating. The acting is excellent supporting the story brilliantly. If I did not already own this DVD I would be buying the Blu-Ray version now, because that offers even more in the way of extras and restored scenes with a genuine improvement in the picture quality.

Kind on the eyes
The 4k collectors edition has 3 discs and 3 versions of the movie for both the included Blu-ray and 4k editions. The 3rd disc contains Blu-ray extras. Remastered it looks beautiful in Dolby vision, the colours are simply gorgeous. However the film is grainy so don’t compare this with any film that has been recently shot with the latest HDR cameras. Remember this movie is 40 years old. Nevertheless this is a beautiful restoration of a classic. The biggest problem is choosing which version to watch? Help is on hand in the settings menu. You can be informed which parts of the movie are different from the original theatrical release during the revamped version.

Sci-fi classic
40 years on, still one of Spielberg's best. A sci-fi classic.I first saw it in the cinema as a child, a few months after the first Star Wars movie. To me (and my entire family) there was no comparison: Close Encounters kick-started my serious sci-fi habit because it's a seriously good movie/story. It also seems oddly optimistic today – would we really be directing melodies towards UFOs rather than missiles? (As for Star Wars – meh. Whatever. Mildly diverting battles in space, mostly two-dimensional if amusing characters and a few cod-Freudian father issues. Though Rogue One a cut above.)Watch this if you enjoy thought-provoking human-centred sci-fi from a director at the top of his game and a star, Richard Dreyfuss, who embodies Everyman in an inimitable, endearing way. Also interesting to see Spielberg playing with ideas that would become ET.Don't watch this if you're after battles in space – go for Guardians of the Galaxy or, of course, any of the Star Wars episodes. (But preferably Rogue One.)

A long watch.
It's not that the special effects are old by 2019, that makes this film average. (The effects have aged exceptionally.) It's that it's a long drag. The build up takes over an hour and a half, and the ending is average. Stuff that happens in the build up always annoyed me, like the guy throwing trash in his house. The abduction of a child. Then the big reveal. I was sick of the five notes long before the credits. The effects of lights of the spaceship wore off, and the dazzling white light was actually offensive. It's not a gripping film. It's more of a slog, with implied excitement. The early small crafts were well done, and about the only good part of the first hour and a half. They were only on screen for maybe twenty seconds though, until they returned at the end.Mildly disappointing.

Beste Version ohne doofes ende!

Will not play DVD
Not compatible with my North American JVC DVD player. Lesson learned the hard way as I removed the shrike wrap voiding the return policy. I never new of such a thing as region video code. To bad, I was so looking forward to watch the movie offer the x-mas holidays. Will stick to buying movies from Walmart avoiding this circumstance.

Special Edition not so Special
I've always enjoyed this movie just as pure entertainment, and so I wanted to own a copy, but I have to say that I was so disappointed in the "Special Edition" because I was unaware that my favorite scene is deleted from this version. The very end, when Roy is taken into the spaceship, and the experience he has inside the spaceship, is NOT THERE!! Huge disappointment!!! Such a crucial scene to be deleted.
