The Ship Model Builder's Assistant Paperback – August 27, 2019

As stated in headline, definitely provides intense detailed guidance in building ship models. As the author states, its important to understand how the full size ships were built to underpin the knowledge for building the models. But the author also provides an insight to life onboard the ships and the community on land that supported them. I stand in awe of the requirements of building and sailing these ships. The author is a national treasure for tying the generations before him with his own time as a seaman. Both the author and those times are long gone, but books such as this are a joy to read. Now when I gaze at a painting of a clipper ship with billowing sails, I think of what it took to build that ship and what courage and physical efforts of those seamen long gone. A simple "wow" says it.And of course, the details on the model mean a whole more with the background information.

I'm on my 12th tall ship build. I wish I would have had this book when I first started making ships back in 2012. Looking back after reading this book, I now see why some of the rigging didn't jive with what the directions told me to do. 20/20 hindsight. If you are going to be making model windjammers, My recommendation is that you should read this book and treat it as the bible for your model and you won't experience the frustrations I did during "formative" years of ship building. This book was very helpful with regards to rigging and other fine details of construction that are never covered in instruction manuals. I bought the set of three books that you recommended and they are wonderful.

A nice well written and illustrated book dealing with the details of a ships rigging, deck details, etc. A must have book for anyone building a wood ship model (even a plastic one could be upgraded using this information). It even deals with planking which is a very important part of the wood ship building process. I purchased my copy "used" after loosing my original book..I found a four leaf clover between the pages! I hope it will work its magic.

For two pages, pp. 160-161, there is help in attaching running rigging to the belaying pins. There could have been more detail in how to thread the lanyards in the deadeyes, p. 89. This book, though superior in its sailor-talk and use of nautical terms, requires constant use of Wikipedia or Google to understand what the author is saying. Finally, don't expect this book to make up for a detailed set of instructions if you are building a kit. Only if, having built several wooden model sailing ships, and having bought many tools along the way and having developed considerable expertise along the way, will this book perhaps lead you to try your hand at building a sailing ship from scratch. This book will help, in that case, in endless ways. By the way, although I paid full price for it, as a new book, it was far from new -- it had yellowish goop outside on the back cover; and although clean inside, the front cover was damaged too. Hence 3 stars.

An excellent summary of the various section of tall ship model building.

What more can I say it's new condition nothing wrong. Now it's up to me to get to reading and comprehend this info so the wooden model shop will turn out as perfect as possible

I have 3 books on build and rigging a model sailing ship. D id a lot of shopping to come up with this one. Am building a 48" sailing model this book is an excellent reference book.

The book has a good preview. I got what I expected.
