The Penguin Book of Spanish Verse (English and Spanish Edition)

An excellent collection, which I have bought several times, and used for years. The translations(of this book, and series) are literal, not literary. The reader should be aware that there are many great translations, great as poetry in their own right, which must be sought elsewhere, a search which is rewarding.

Este libro es what I needed. With the English translations for easy reference its good for learners of nearly all levels and can teach the reader a good amount of Spanish culture.

It cannot be perfect because it aims to be so complete. The essential works by all the most important writers, and even quite a few not so famous, are here. The translations are a useful guide to comprehension but they cannot be read as poetry; they make no effort at imitating, or even suggesting, the beauty or precision of the original texts.

The book arrived in a timely manner and was in excellent condition. It was what I expected and so I am quite satisfied with this purchase. I am relearning Spanish after having studied it in my long lost youth, and these types of books of quality literature with side by side translation to confirm your understanding are a wonderful and enjoyable asset.

It is a lovely book, and I buy this copy because my old one is worn out. The heavy paper make this new one less agreeable and less likely to last, but needs must when the devil drives. The book is highly recommended to all who love poetry and appreciate it in bilingual form. The translations are made so as to enable even those with little Spanish to enjoy the poetry, not merely the sense.

Personally I love this book and have for many years. Originally I bought for myself, then perchased a second copy for my sister who is learning Spanish and I thought it might be an easy and fun way to aid in her studies. It spans many eras from the time of El Cid to Federico Garcia Lorca. Definitely worth the money. This volume will bring joy to anyone interested to find hard to locate poetry. And poetry lovers in general

Good collection but I have only dipped into it yet as I am a developing reader of Spanish. It is one for the bookshelf and gives a broad view of the history and style of Spanish poetry. I would like to buy a contemporary collection next as this book by its very nature can only touch briefly on poets from the 20th century.
